Compositions having improved crystallization properties and physical properties comprise (a) a continuous phase of first biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate comprising a copolymer, or a blend thereof, of at least two randomly repeating monomer units (RRMU), wherein the first RRMU has the structure (I): (I) wherein R1 is H, or C1 or C2 alkyl, and n is 1 or 2; and the second RRMU is different from the first RRMU and comprises at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of the structures (II) and (III): (II) wherein R2 is a C3-C19 alkyl or C3-C19 alkenyl, and (III) wherein m is from 2 to about 16, and wherein the copolymer has a melting point Tm1, and (b) a second crystallizable biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate homopolymer or copolymer, which comprises at least one randomly repeating monomer unit having the structure (IV): (IV) wherein R3 is H, or C1 or C2 alkyl, and p is 1 or 2, and further wherein the second biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate has a melting point Tm2, wherein Tm2 is at least about 20°C greater than Tm1. The compositions are formed by solution or melt blending of the components (a) and (b) and may be formed into shaped articles.

The products exhibit a desirable combination of high strength, ductility and toughness, while maintaining flexibility, biodegradability and compostability. The present invention further relates to absorbent articles (e.g., diapers, sanitary napkins, pantiliners, etc.) comprising a liquid pervious topsheet, a liquid impervious backsheet comprising a film comprising the polyester blend compositions of the present invention and an absorbent core positioned between the topsheet and the backsheet.

The present invention relates to tough and ductile biodegradable, aliphatic polyester blend compositions and methods for preparing such compositions. It relates to products made out of such blend compositions, including, but not limited to, films, fibers, nonwovens, sheets, coatings, binders, foams and molded products for packaging. The polyester blend of the present invention comprises:(a) a copolymer comprising two randomly repeating monomer units wherein the first randomly repeating monomer unit has the structure: of formula (I) wherein R1 is H, or C1 or C2 alkyl, and n is 1 or 2. The second RRMU comprises at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of the structures (II) and (III): of formula (II) wherein R2 is a C3-C19 alkyl or C3-C19 alkenyl, and formula (III) wherein m is from 2 to about 16; wherein at least about 50 mole % of the copolymer comprises RRMUs having the structure of the first RRMU of formula (I) and wherein the polyhydroxyalkanoate is present at a level of at least about 20 %, by weight, of the total of the polyhydroxyalkanoate and the aliphatic ester polycondensate. In formula (i) R1 is H or a C1-2 alkyl and n is 1 or 2; and the second randomly repeating monomer unit has the structure of formula (ii) wherein R2 is a C3-19 alkyl or alkenyl; and (b) an aliphatic ester polycondensate synthesized from an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol and an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid compound.

A method for producing a stretch laminate includes forming an intermediate stretch laminate. Forming the intermediate stretch laminate includes providing a first substrate and attaching an elastic film to a surface of the first substrate via an adhesive. The first substrate and the elastic film are in a face to face orientation. The intermediate stretch laminate has a residual energy of greater than or equal to 50% at a predetermined applied strain. The method of forming the stretch laminate further includes mechanically activating the intermediate stretch laminate at a strain rate of at least 100s-1.
