An aerosol dispenser, outer container for an aerosol dispenser and a preform for an outer container, each having an open neck at the top and a closed end bottom longitudinally spaced therefrom. The aerosol dispenser has, in order, from the top of the neck, a valve attachment, an annular first surface and an annular second surface, each having a respective diameter. The diameter of the valve attachment is greater than the diameter of the first surface, which, in turn, is greater than the diameter of the second surface. This geometry allows any complimentary product delivery to be disposed on the second surface. Any suitable and complimentary valve may be attached to the valve attachment and sealed to the first surface. This arrangement provides flexibility and the capability to easily mix and match any desired combination of fittingly suitable outer containers, product delivery devices and valves. Suitable product delivery devices include bags, and dip tubes.

The multi-piece valve stem (31) allows for interchangeability of component parts, without requiring several stems to fit related valves (28), as are commonly used for aerosol dispensers (20). The multi-piece valve stem (31) also provides for assembly of valve stems (31) having a larger head (33), and thus more seal area, than can occur with a single piece valve stem, as is conventionally used. The present invention relates to improved product dispensers for various products, including solids, gels, semi-solids, and other substantially solid products. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the dispenser (10) is in the form of an improved twist-up type dispenser with an application/distribution surface in the form of a mesh applicator head (50) for covering the exposed end of a solid stick of product. The dispenser includes a force-limiting mechanism (36, 72) to limit the force exerted by the product on the mesh applicator head (50) during pre-loading to prevent extrusion of the product. The dispenser further includes a force-maintaining (70) mechanism to maintain the surface of the product in continuous intimate contact with the mesh applicator head during the application process. The surface of the product exposed via the apertures (51) is sheared off in conventional fashion, and the mesh provides for a more even distribution of the product than conventional solid stick-type dispensers. The resulting dispenser provides application and distribution properties superior to current solid-stick dispensers and enables the products to be more easily applied in a consistent, less messy fashion.
