摘要： A liquid crystal display television receiver projection system uses a high-intensity discharge lamp (302) as a back lighting source. The lamp is of the type that should not be re-started or turned on immediately after being turned off. In response to a user power off command (113), the display screen (303) will immediately give a false appearance of being turned off, during a first interval of, for example, 30 seconds that immediately follows the power off command. Despite the appearance of being turned off, the lamp is maintained powered on, during the first interval. Should a user issue a power on command, before the first interval has elapsed, the user will not experience any start-up delay. Should the user not issue the power on command, during the first interval, the lamp will be de-energized.

摘要： The present invention overcomes problems in the prior art of updating/upgrading remote controls to include functions and/or abilities not originally planned when the remote control was being designed/manufactured. A set-top device itself can be an updated device which can be bundled with an outdated remote control. The set-top box can provide a remote teacher display or such a display can be made available from a distance via the internet or satellite. In such a case, a remote control can be used to select a specif on-screen display button from the remote teacher. The corresponding remote control code is then taught to a learning remote control by a blaster driven by the device. In such a case, the device is able to drive a blaster which serves as a substitute for a teaching remote control in order to teach and/or update/upgrade the learning remote control.

Program information can be automatically stored in a memory location. The program information can be determined by accessing an on-line program guide and monitoring a user video channel selection. At least a portion of the program information can be displayed in a time-line (300) and sub-divided into a plurality of time increments (320, 325, 330). Responsive to a user input, playback of a portion of the programming corresponding to a user selection can begin. The user selection can be a selected portion of the program information that has been marked by the user. The user selection also can be identified by a recording time, which can include a start time and a stop time.

A determination is made to see whether the associated auxiliary programming information is available for the selected first program for recording. The operation can include setting a display parameter for the video apparatus to a first predetermined level responsive to determining that the first user input activates the browser feature, or determining an idle time and inactivating the browser feature if the idle time exceeds a predetermined period of time.

According to an exemplary embodiment, the present invention overcomes this problem by providing a method that includes the steps of detecting activation of a recording function of a video apparatus (201), and turning off a user-activated display function of the video apparatus responsive to the detection (203).
