According to the invention, a high capacity alkali primary battery excellent in high rate characteristics is obtained using a positive electrode active substance, wherein the particles of the nickel oxyhydroxide base compound as the positive electrode active substance has a surface coated with a higher oxide of cobalt and comprises zinc and cobalt separately or an eutectic crystal with zinc and cobalt, and a half-width of an X-ray diffraction peak at a diffraction angle at around 18° in an X-ray diffraction pattern of 0.4 to 0.48 obtained by using a CuKα line as an X-ray source. A further excellent battery is obtained by using zinc containing a powder with a particle diameter of 75 µm or less in the range of 10% by mass or more and 20% by mass or less.

The object of the invention is to provide an alkali primary battery being excellent in high rate discharge characteristics with less increase of the inner pressure by generating hydrogen in the overdischarge process. The invention provides a sealed nickel zinc primary battery comprising at least a positive electrode having a higher oxide of nickel as a positive electrode active substance, a negative electrode having zinc or an alloy thereof as a negative electrode active substance, a separator and an electrolyte solution housed in a vessel, wherein manganese dioxide is added in a proportion of 3 to 7% by mass relative to the higher oxide of nickel in the positive electrode, and the ratio between the theoretical capacity of the negative electrode to the theoretical capacity of the positive electrode (the theoretical capacity of the negative electrode/theoretical capacity of the positive electrode) is in the range of 1.2 to 1.0.

An enclosed nickel-zinc primary battery which uses as an anode an anode active material of nickel hydroxide compound, such as nickel oxyhydroxide, particles and uses zinc alloy gel as a cathode material, wherein a ratio of anode theoretical capacity to cathode theoretical capacity is 1.0-1.6, and a ratio of alkali electrolyte to anode theoretical capacity is 1.0-1.6 ml/Ah.
