The present invention intends to provide a two-dimensional photonic crystal resonator having a high Q-value. The slab-shaped body 21 is provided with cyclically arranged holes 22. The body 21 is divided into three areas 31-33 with the holes 22 arranged with cycle distances of a 1 in area 31 and a 2 in areas 32 and 33, which is smaller than a 1 . A waveguide 23 passing through the three areas is formed by linearly eliminating the holes 22. The waveguide 23 thus formed can propagate rays of light within a wavelength band that depends on the cycle distance of the holes 22. The cycle distance of the holes in the area 31 differs from that of the areas 32 and 33, and the wavelength band of the light propagating through the waveguide accordingly differs. Therefore, a ray of light whose wavelength is within the waveguide transmission wavelength band of the area 31 but outside of the waveguide transmission wavelength band of the other areas 32 and 33 will be confined within the waveguide of the area 31 and resonate therein. Thus, the waveguide in the area 31 functions as a resonator.

A target material sensor using a photonic crystal being high in sensitivity to a target material to be detected and capable of being downsized, and a detection method for a target material. The sensor comprises an electromagnetic wave generating source for supplying an electromagnetic wave, a photonic sensor element and a detector. The photonic sensor element comprises a sensor waveguide having a photonic crystal structure to introduce an electromagnetic wave, and a sensor resonator coupled electro-magnetically with the sensor waveguide to resonate an introduced electromagnetic wave at a specific wavelength, the characteristics of an electromagnetic wave emitted from the sensor resonator being changed when the sensor resonator is exposed to an atmosphere containing a target material. The detector recognizes the intensity change of an electromagnetic wave on receiving it emitted from the sensor resonator, and determines the concentration of a target material from this intensity change to output a concentration-indicating signal.

A two-dimensional photonic crystal, wherein a clad layer (32) is disposed on the lower side of a slab layer (31), and areas (35) having refraction factors different from that of the slab layer (31) are cyclically disposed in the slab layer (31). Also, the crystal comprises a spot defect (36) formed by the missing of a part of the areas (35). The spot defect (36) forms a resonator resonating light of a specified wavelength. An air bridge space (37) is formed in the specified area of the clad layer (32) to face the spot defect (36). Since the slab layer (31) is supported by the clad layer (32) in those areas other than the area in which the air bridge space (37) is formed, the mechanical strength of the two-dimensional photonic crystal is high. Since the air bridge space (37) is present under the spot defect (36), light can be easily entrapped in the spot defect (36) due to a difference in refraction factor between the slab layer (31) and air. Accordingly, the spot defect (36) forms the resonator having high performance.

A two-dimensional photonic crystal in which a complete photonic band gap (PBG) becoming PBG for both TE polarized wave and TM polarized wave in a specified wavelength region is formed and the width that complete PBG of can be ensured sufficiently. Holes (22) each having a right triangular basic shape are arranged in a triangular lattice form in the body (21). A complete PBG is formed by such shape and arrangement of the holes. Distance between adjacent holes (i.e. the width at the joint of the body) is ensured by cornering the vertexes of the right triangle arcuately, and the hole (22) can be enlarged while ensuring sufficient strength of the two-dimensional photonic crystal. Consequently, the complete PBG width can be increased.
