Disclosed is a toothpaste composition comprising: (i) 20 to 60 wt% of a calcium based abrasive; (ii) 3 to 15 wt% humectant; and, (iii) upto 2 wt% thickening silica; wherein the composition comprises 0.2 to 3 wt% smectite clay. Disclosed composition provides superior sensory profile as well as an increased uptake of antibacterial agent by the oral tissue.

Disclosed is an oral care composition having: (i) 5 to 60 wt% abrasive; (ii) an anionic surfactant; and, (iii) a bipolar antimicrobial particle whose precursor is an asymmetric 1:1 or 2:1:1 clay particle comprising alternating tetrahedral and octahedral sheets terminating with a tetrahedral sheet at one external surface plane and an octahedral sheet at another external surface plane with an antimicrobial agent attached to the coordinating cation on one of the said external surface plane where the antibacterial agent is a quaternary ammonium material. The disclosed compositions are highly effective at controlling bacterial re-growth, as well as they are equally good at providing immediate control on the bacterial count.

It has been found that toothpastes containing balance amounts of calcium based abrasive, copolymer of vinylmethylether and maleic acid and clay have significantly better stability even at elevated temperature. It has also been determined that the selected combination allows for complete removal of or at least a significant reduction in thickening silica, with almost no adverse effect on rheology. Disclosed is a toothpaste composition comprising: (i) a calcium based abrasive; (ii) a copolymer of vinylmethyl ether and maleic acid; and (iii) a clay, wherein ratio of the calcium based abrasive to said copolymer of vinylmethyl ether and maleic acid is at least 1:0075 and ratio of said calcium based abrasive to said clay is at least 1:0.02.

The present invention relates to a toothpaste composition, it particularly relates to a toothpaste composition having a fluoride source for enhancing remineralisation of tooth. It is desired that the performance of the fluoride source in a toothpaste composition is improved and in that the fluoride source delivers maximum benefit to tooth without compromising on the other benefits derivable from the toothpaste composition. Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a toothpaste composition which retains a desirable level of soluble fluoride upon storage. It has been surprisingly found by the present inventors that a toothpaste composition having a fluoride source provides for improved remineralisation of the teeth when the composition includes an abrasive silica or a calcium based abrasive, a 1:1 layered silicate clay and a 2:1 layered silicate clay.
