A capacitance probe (36) monitors the distance between a blade tip (33) and a fan (18), compressor (11) or turbine (13) case. The capacitance probe (36) may be attached to a liner (37), and may travel with the liner (37) as it radially expands due to thermal changes. The capacitance probe (36) may include a circuit board sensor (38) with a metallic plate (40), and one or more capacitors (42). The metallic plate (40) may be encapsulated within an insulating material (44). A plurality of soft leads (48) may be in electrical communication with the circuit board sensor (38), allowing a lower lead weight, reduced size and increased flexibility. The soft leads (48) may also be embedded in the liner (37). In this way, the capacitance probe (36) can record more accurate distance measurements and promote a gas turbine engine's continued and efficient operation.

During this method, a tri-axial capacitance probe (32) is provided that includes a tri-axial conduit with an outer conductor member. The tri-axial capacitance probe (32) is configured to output data indicative of a characteristic of the rotor (12). The tri-axial capacitance probe (32) is configured within a wall aperture in the wall (14). The outer conductor member is electrically coupled with the wall (12). The wall (12) is configured as a housing for the tri-axial capacitance probe (32).
