The invention relates to a method for detecting the structure of moving single items, in particular for detecting foreign particles in liquid or paste-like products, in which a single item (3) moved along a given direction is irradiated with wide-band X-rays, and in which along at least one predetermined stationary detection line (E 1 to E m ) transverse to the movement direction the radiation that has passed through the single item (3) is detected at a plurality of sampling positions of the single item (3) in the movement direction. During a predetermined detection time interval, for each sampling position simultaneously a respective at least one first partial image for a first spectral section of the X-rays and a second partial image for a second spectral section of the X-rays or the entire spectrum of the X-rays is detected along the at least one detection line (E 1 to E m ), and converted into partial image data. Associated with each of the at least two partial images is a number of discrete detection positions arranged along the detection line (E 1 to E m ), said positions being arranged preferably alternately along the detection line (E 1 to E m ). A value for the radiation energy in the relevant spectral section is determined at the detection positions associated with a partial image for generating the relevant partial image data. The partial image data of the at least one first and second image is combined by calculation to form a partial resulting image in order to improve the contrast in relation to predetermined characteristics of the structure of the single item (3) and the partial resulting images of all sampling positions are combined to form a resulting image. The invention further relates to a device for carrying out said method.
