摘要: A transient state liquid crystal image bar (12) having enhanced contrast with lower required driving voltage. The image bar is of the type having a nematic liquid crystal cell configured as a single array of dot shutters energizable by a single frequency voltage with crossed polarizer (14) and analyzer (15). The polarizing axis of the polarizer is at 45 degrees with the liquid crystal molecules (13) in their rest state. Thus, when all the image bar shutters are energized, it is in the non-transmission condition. For bursts of light to pass, the voltage to selected dot shutters is interrupted and reapplied. In one embodiment, the improvement is achieved by an optical compensator (28) or thin prism placed between the polarizer and the liquid crystal cell. In another embodiment, a quarter-wave plate is placed between the liquid crystal cell and the analyzer, with the analyzer being rotated about the image bar's optical axis a predetermined angle from its initial crossed position with respect to the polarizer, so that there is increased extinction of the light exiting from the liquid crystal cell, when the liquid crystal material is in its normally stable energized state.

摘要: A digital LED printer is described which enables improved printing of images including both text and half-tones. A plurality of LED chips (1,2, ....N) are aligned in a row to form a printbar of a length sufficient to expose the width of a recording medium, such as a photoreceptor drum or belt. Each LED chip has an associated driver chip (40) which controls the individual LED on/off time as well as the magnitude of current applied to each LED so as to maintain uniform exposure of each energized LED. The LED on/off time is controlled by selection of one of a plurality of two bit or four bit gray level strobe signals, which are decoded (38) according to system logic. The LED printbar is addressed, during each pixel time interval, along a plurality of sub-lines, the exposure levels of each sub-line differing from the other. In one technique, sub-lines are associated with either printing of text or half-tones. In another technique, the number of gray level exposures is increased by overprinting sub-lines with subsequent sub-lines of different resolutions.

A liquid crystal birefringent MTF filter 20 is permanently positioned between the lens 18 and the sensor array 15 of an image input scanner 10 to reduce image modulation at frequencies where moiré occurs, with a source of electric potential and a control switch for selectively applying the potential and switching the filter to or from a filtering state. In a variation of the first embodiment, a two-stage MTF filter is used. In a second embodiment, a tunable liquid crystal scattering MTF filter is combined with a full width sensor array.

摘要: Amulticolor display (300) which comprises a high contrast liquid crystal device (320), light source (314) and a luminance-balanced color mask (318). The liquid crystal device is the transmissive, twisted nematic type having high extinction ratio polarizers on the input and output sides and functions as a light shutter for the display. The liquid crystal material has a dichroic dye admixed therein to prevent build- up of the contrast limiting orthogonal mode electric vector of polarized light. The color mask contains different colored patches with gray surrounds, and the colored patches are luminance balanced in order that the different colored data displays are of substantially equal brightness. During the off-state there is no light bleed through so that the display presents a uniformly dark state or dead front.
