The connector comprises a connector housing having a terminal accommodating chamber therein, a flexible engagement arm provided to the inner wall of the terminal accommodating chamber of the connector housing, the flexible arm extending forwardly, and engagement portion formed in a terminal for engagement with the tip of the flexible engagement arm, engagement pieces at each side of the engagement portion of the terminal, and engagement projection formed at each side of the flexible engagement arm, the engagement projections each having a vertical shoulder surface at the front and a tapered slope at the back thereof. The shoulder surfaces of the engagement projections are engaged with the rear edges of the engagement pieces of the terminal while at the same time the flexible engagement arm tip is engaged with the engagement portion of the terminal to provide a double locking for preventing the terminal from slipping off from the rear of the connector housing.

A hood 11 for a female connector 30 is provided with slide members 13 arranged to be slid in a reciprocative manner. Guide pins 44 of a male connector 40 are engaged with guide grooves 14 provided for the slide members 13. When the slide members 13 are slid in the forward direction, the male connector 40 is introduced into the female connector 30 so that the two connectors are connected to each other. Moreover, when the slide members 13 are slid in the returning direction, the two connectors are separated from each other. The hood 11 of the female connector 30 is provided with guide recesses 12 for slidably accommodating the slide members 13. The tops of side walls 11g and 11i of the guide recesses 12 are connected to each other by bridging ribs 19. Thus, inclination of the side walls 11g and 11i is prevented. As a result, increase in the slide resistance of the slide member 13 caused from the inclination of the walls towards one another can be prevented.

In assembling, an assembling port of the connector 30 is assembled to an opening 18 of the hood assembly 10. A female connector 30 is provided with a reciprocative and slidable slide member 13; an operation lever 20 ratably coupled to the connector for sliding the slide member 13 within the connector; and a guide groove 14 and a guide pin 44 arranged to be engaged to the slide member 13 and a male connector 40. The operation lever 20 is rotated to introduce the male connector 40 into the female connector 30 so that the two connectors are connected to each other. A projection 27 arranged to be brought into contact with the outer surface of the male connector 40 when the guide groove 14 and the guide pin 44 have incompletely been connected to each other is integrally provided with a side wall 22 of the operation lever 20 so as to prevent rotation of the operation lever 20. Thus, the connector structure will resist breakage and deformation even if excessive force is exerted on the lever when attempting to secure a connection while the male and female connectors are not completely connected.

According to a connector engaging structure of this invention, first and second connectors are mutually fitted to with each other or separated from each other by pivoting an operation lever. The operation lever is pivotably supported by a housing of the first connector through a supporting shaft. An engaging protrusion is provided on a front face of the housing. An engaging hole for engaging with or disengaging from the engaging protrusion is provided on a first side wall of the operation lever opposing the engaging protrusion. A gap is formed between a rear face of the housing and a second side wall of the operation lever. When the second side wall of the operation lever is moved toward the rear face of the housing so that the gap is reduced, the engaging state between the engaging protrusion and engaging hole can be released. Therefore, it is possible to prevent an error releasing of the engagement of the operation lever with such a simple structure and release the operation lever engaging state easily when it is necessary.
