A method and apparatus for protecting a horizontally reciprocable light projector (8) from collision with a vertically reciprocable punch (1) of a button setting machine, wherein a lost motion mechanism (21) is provided for producing a delay between retracting movement of the light projector (8) and the downward movement of the punch (1) to such an extent that the light projector (8) is retracted from the vertical path of movement of the punch (1) before the punch (1) starts moving downward. The lost motion mechanism is composed of a shaft (16) having an annular actuating flange (18), and a cylinder member (17) slidably receiving therein the shaft (16). The actuating flange (18) is normally separated from the cylinder member (17) and engageable with the cylinder member (17) to lower the punch (1) when the light projector (8) is retracted from the vertical path of movement of the punch (1).

There are provided left and right gripper devices for holding left and right tip side portions of a slide fastener chain, transferring the fastener chain in a longitudinal direction (an X-axis direction) and opening and closing the left and right tip side portions in a Y-axis direction orthogonal to the X-axis direction based on a command sent from operation control means. There is provided an electric motor for controllably driving the left and right gripper devices in the X-Y axis direction based on a command sent from a numeric control section of the operation control means in the X-Y axis direction of the gripper devices. A slider can be automatically inserted by only a specified operation using a single device without preparing a special device for all types of fastener chains and sliders and requiring a time for a considerable reconstruction.

A stopper portion (4) has a minute protrusion on part of an outer peripheral face except a side face in the length direction of a fastener tape (2). This protrusion is a rib-like protrusion (4f) extended linearly in the length direction of the fastener tape formed on a vertex of the surface of a bent portion (4c), a protrusion (4g) extended so as to be expanded in a curved shape in the length direction of the fastener tape or a rib-like protrusion (4e) protruded along a boundary portion between the bent portion of the stopper portion (4) and a bottom face thereof. Existence of this protrusion not only reduces a sliding resistance when the slider is started but also eliminates prickly feeling and feeling of disharmony originating from a shape of an upper stopper which is a kind of the conventional stopper portion.

A weld portion produced by heat welding and a non-weld portion which does not undergo heat welding are formed on a contact face between an inside face of a stopper portion (4) made of synthetic resin and a surface of a fastener tape (2). Preferably, a bottom end face of a rear side of the stopper portion (4) is made substantially flush with a rear surface of the fastener tape (2) by heating with pressure. Consequently, embrittlement of the stopper portion (4) is prevented and its fixing strength is secured, thereby eliminating itchy feeling and feeling of discomfort originating from a configuration of the upper stopper portion.
