摘要: An electric power cable of the kind having at least one metallic conductor, optionally a conductor screen of semiconductive material, and insulation all enclosed in an earth screen formed by wires or narrow tapes and a sheath formed by polymeric material is characterised by a sheath construction including a first extruded polymeric layer which encloses the earth screen of the cable without filling the gaps between the components thereof (the wires or strips), a second extruded polymeric layer enclosing the first and between them a moisture barrier laminate having a metal foil layer coated on one of its major faces with a polymeric material compatible with the material of the extruded layer it contacts and bonded to that extruded layer only. That increases the resistance of the cable to impact, compared with constructions in which a moisture barrier foil layer is applied directly over the screen wires, and increases flexibility and reduces cost compared with constructions in which the foil is bonded to both extruded layers.

摘要: A method of forming a joint in an optical line that extends along a phase conductor (1) of a high voltage overhead power transmission system, comprises: (i) forming a length of optical cable (10) which comprises a plurality of optical fibres; (ii) encapsulating the optical fibres; (iii) providing an intermediate region of the length of optical cable with an outer, non-tracking jacket (12) so that a part of the length of optical cable extends from each end of the outer, non-tracking jacket; (iv) installing the jacket so that it extends between phase potential and any other potential to which the cable will be subjected; and (v) connecting one end of the optical fibres of the optical cable to fibres in the optical line of the phase conductor (1), and connecting the other end of the optical fibres of the optical cable to another optical line. The parts of the length of the optical cable that extend from each end of the outer, non-tracking jacket (12) have a sufficient length that connections can be formed between the optical fibres and the optical lines at points remote from regions in which the cable extends along high electrical field gradients. This has the advantage that the optical fibres of the assembly which, in use, will extend between the potential of the phase conductor and earth can be encapsulated in the factory under controlled conditions, and conventional means may be employed to connect the cable.

摘要: Capacitance transducer apparatus, for example for measuring blade tip clearance in a jet engine of gas turbine, comprises an oscillator (14) connected by a cable (6) to a capacitance means such as a probe (4). The cable is tri-axial comprising an inner conductor (22), an outer protective layer (24) and an intermediate layer (26) between the outer layer and inner conductor, the inner conductor, intermediate layer and outer layer all being electrical conductors. The intermediate layer (26) consists of a material that is different to that forming the outer layer and is of relatively high electrical conductivity. The resistance of the intermediate layer is preferably less than 1 Ohm metre-1, and especially les than 0.1 Ohm metre-1, which may be achieved by forming the intermediate layer from a nickel based material, and especially from pure nickel. The reduction in the intermediate layer resistance can lead to higher sensivity of the apparatus by enabling any guard driver amplifier (165) in the apparatus to drive the capacitance over the full length of the cable.

摘要: An optical line system comprises: (i) an optical fibre that includes a plurality of reflectors, for example Bragg gratings, located at different positions along the optical fibre; and (ii) a monitoring arrangement located in the region of one end of the optical fibre for monitoring the system by an optical reflectometry method in which light is reflected by the reflectors. The system is characterised in that at least two of the reflectors have reflectivities that differ from one another, the reflector that is more distant from the monitoring arrangement having a higher reflectivity than the Bragg grating that is nearer to the monitoring arrangement. Preferably the reflectivities of the reflectors increases as the distance from the monitoring arrangement increase, the reflectivities preferably having the relationship (I) Rn-1=(2T2Rn+1)-(1+4T2Rn)?1/2/2T2R¿n where: Rn is the reflectivity of the n th reflector from the monitoring arrangement, Rn-1 is the reflectivity of the (n-1)th reflector from the monitoring arrangement, and T is the transmission coefficient of any branch that may be present between the (n-1)th and the n th reflector (and is unity if no such branch exists). Such a system has the advantage that the signal-to-noise ratio of the most distant reflectors is increased by the greatest extent so that differences in the signal-to-noise ratio of different reflectors is reduced.

摘要: A method is described of installing a lightweight (preferably less than 10 g/m) optical fibre unit into a tube by pulling using a pulling member. The pulling member may be attached to the pulling member by a braided sheath, or the pulling member itself be a braided tube.

摘要: A method of manufacturing a stranded assembly of flexible elements for example an electrical or optical cable in which the lay of the elements is repeatedly reversed along the length of the assembly, comprises: (i) feeding the elements (X) into one end of a guide, the guide having an upstream region in which one internal lateral dimension thereof constrains the strands to lie in side-by-side relationship and in which an orthogonal internal lateral dimension is greater than the total width of the elements, and a downstream region in which the elements are forced into a generally cylindrical geometry; and (ii) removing the elements from the other end of the guide in the form of a stranded assembly (Y). The elements are fed into the guide at a higher speed than they are removed from the guide so that they are forced into a serpentine configuration in the guide, and in the downstream region the serpentine configuration is converted into a generally helical one in which the lay of the elements is repeatedly reversed.

摘要: A concrete pile section (1,2) comprises an elongate body of reinforced concrete having a socket (5) at its top end and a spigot (6) at its bottom end which are shaped and relatively dimensioned such that when the spigot (6) at the bottom of one such section (1,2) is fully inserted into the socket (5) at the top of another such section (1,2) to form a joint there is an interference fit between the spigot (6) and socket (5) in at least two zones (7,8) spaced apart along the length of the joint but a clearance fit in at least a third zone (9) spacing the said two zones (7,8). The socket (5) is reinforced by at least one hoop member (13,14) in each of these two zones (7,8), preferably by a separate circular hoop member (19,20) embedded in the concrete in each of the zones (7,8). If desired, a resinous adhesive or a non-shrink grout may occupy the clearances in the third zone (9) and/or elsewhere. Even without such adhesive, however, the interference fit in the first and second zones (7,8) creates an immediate frictional engagement so that installation of the pile can continue immediately.
