A microparticle system for use as a retention and drainage aid in the production of alkaline and acid paper products comprises a high molecular weight flocculant polymer (6) and a silica-acid colloid blend (7), and optionally a cationic coagulant or a medium molecular weight flocculant (5). The high molecular weight flocculant polymer (6) may be added to the furnish after the fan pump (1) and prior to the pressure screen (2); the silica-acid colloid blend (7) may be added to the furnish after the pressure screen (2), and optionally, the coagulant or medium molecular weight flocculant (5) may be added prior to the fan pump (1). Addition of the microparticle system to the paper furnish improves retention and drainage during the papermaking process and sheet formation. The acid colloid of the silica-acid colloid blend (7) is a polymer or a copolymer of a melamine aldehyde acid colloid.

A microparticle system for use as a retention and drainage aid in the production of alkaline and acid paper products comprises a HMW flocculant polymer (6), an acid colloid (7), and a coagulant or a MMW flocculant (5). The acid colloid (7) comprises an aqueous solution of a water soluble polymer or copolymer of melamine aldehyde, preferably melamine formaldehyde, and is present in an amount ranging between 0.0005 % to 0.5 % by weight based on the dry weight of the solids in the furnish. The HMW flocculant polymer (6) may be added to stock or furnish after the fan pump; and prior to the pressure screen (2); the acid colloid (7) may be added to the stock after the pressure screen (2), and the coagulant/MMW flocculant (5) may be added prior to the fan pump (1). Alternatively, this sequence of chemical additions can be changed, i.e. the acid colloid (7) can be added prior to or after the fan pump (1) or prior to the pressure screen (2). Addition of the microparticle system to the paper furnish improves retention, drainage and sheet formation during the papermaking process.

A keratin conditioning composition is disclosed that contains (a) a surfactant component that can contain anionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, cationic surfactants, nonionic surfactants and/or zwitterionic (b) a water soluble, organic, ampholytic polymer conditioning agent; (c) a water soluble, organic, cationic polymer conditioning agent; (d) optionally a water insoluble liquid; and (e) an aqueous carrier. The conditioning composition optionally contains a silicone and/or an organic, water insoluble, liquid. The conditioning composition according to the present invention is useful in cleaning and/or conditioning keratin based substrates, such as hair, skin, and nails.

A natural gum is used to provide improved emulsification of alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) sizing agents for paper products. The natural gum can be nonionic, cationic, anionic, amphoteric, oxidized, derivatized, or modified. The preferred natural gum is from the family of galactomannan gums in which guar gum is a primary example. The alkenyl succinic anhydride (ASA) size emulsion formed with the natural gum improves stability and the film formed is evenly distributed, thereby promoting more uniform sizing of the paper product. The ratio of the ASA to natural gum in the emulsion ranges from 0.01:1 to 100:1, and preferably 0.1:1 to 20:1. The amount of ASA size is 1 lb./ton to 10 lbs./ton of finished paper product and preferably 2 lbs./ton to 8 lbs./ton. A surfactant may be used to further improve the stability of the emulsion.
