A removable hard disc memory cartridge (10), for use with a drive mechanism including a spindel (20) located within a drive housing. The drive housing interior is provided with stationary position registration members (23, 23') which cooperates with mating side edge portions of the cartridge (33A, 33B, 33C, 34, 35, 36) to provide positive positioning when the cartridge is inserted into the drive housing. A disc lock (46, 52) carried by the cartridge maintains the internally mounted cartridge disk (14) in a secured locked position when the cartridge is not in use, the lock mechanism cooperating with release posts (21, 22) carried by the drive housing to free the disc (14) for rotation just prior to engagement by the drive spindle (20). The disc has a self centering hub including a spindle referencing member having an aperture for receiving the free end of the spindle, the referencing member including angularly spaced arcuate segments (71, 72) closely matched to the radius of curvature of the drive spindle and providing a lateral abutment for the outer surface of the spindle, the referencing member further including a spindle biasing spring (75) laterally spaced from the arcuate segments (71, 72) and engageable with the outer surface of the spindle (20) for urging the spindle into surface contact with the arcuate segments. The housing includes an end wall with an air exit port (82) laterally displaced from the transducer access port (81) which provides a circumferentially oriented flow exit path for air entering the volume enclosed by the cartridge via the access port when the disc (14) is rotated.

@ A technique for enabling authentication of a magnetic memory disk. Predetermined portions of preselected tracks on the disk recording surface are deliberately removed and the locations of the modified portions are recorded, along with an initial program routine. The portions are alternatively removed by mechanically abrading the recording surface using a stylus, by embossing the preselected portions and applying an abrasive member to the embossed raised surfaces, by burning off the portions with a laser, or by chemical etching. When the disk is inserted into a drive, an initial program routine recorded on the disk causes the drive transducer to seek the pretreated portions and attempt a write and subsequent read operation. A successful write/read operation indicates a counterfeit copy. This indication may be used to signal the operator or erase the entire program from the disk.

Apparatus and a method for positioning a flexible magnetic recording medium, such as a floppy disk, (12; 112), in such a way as to permit magnetic means (14; 162) on opposed sides of the medium to orient the particles in the magnetic coatings on the medium immediately after the coatings have been applied to the medium and as the medium is rotated. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes stabilizing devices (22) which are located at circumferentially spaced locations about the outer periphery of the medium (12) when the medium is mounted for rotation. Each device comprises a pair of substantially J-shaped, wire-like members (38) arranged to define a gap (46) between which the outer peripheral margin of the medium (12) passes. The J-shaped members (38) can be tubular or solid. If tubular, they can be used direct fluid under pressure onto the opposite sides of the medium as the medium rotates. In a second embodiment, a pair of bowl-shaped members (125,126) are hingedly mounted together and moved into face-to-face relationship with each other but are spaced apart to present an outer peripheral, continuous gap (128) which receives the outer peripheral margin of the medium (112) when the medium is rotatably mounted on one of the bowl-shaped members. Air is directed into the interiors of the bowl-shaped members and then outwardly therefrom through the gap on opposite sides of the medium to provide Venturi effect to keep the outer peripheral margin of the medium centered in the gap and stabilized against deviation out of the plane of rotation of the medium.
