An electric selector control system 12 for an automatic transmission having five operating modes, Park mode, Drive mode, Neutral mode, Sport mode and Reverse mode has a multi-stable rotary selector 17 which is operable by the driver of the vehicle to select a respective one of the operating modes of the transmission. The vehicle includes a keyless entry system K which has an electronic ignition control module 14 for selectably turning the ignition of the engine on or off in response to activity of an On/Off switch 13. The vehicle further has an Electronic Transmission Selector (ETS) 20 for sensing the selected mode position of the selector 17 and sending a command to the Transmission. The multi-stable rotary selector 17 further includes selector drive means 22 which in use are controlled by the ETS 20 to automatically move the multi-stable selector 17 to Park mode when a shutting-off of an engine by the On/Off switch is detected. The automatic motion of the selector 17 is prevented over a predetermined period when the selector 17 is in Neutral mode before a shutting-off of the engine by the On/Off switch 13.

A security system for remotely locking and unlocking closure members of a motor vehicle 10 is disclosed in which a hand gesture recognition device is associated with a keyless entry system having a security device 23 and a portable unit 19. The hand gesture recognition device includes at least one sensitised area 25 for detecting a hand gesture, an input/output device positioned in the passenger compartment for selecting or creating at least one pattern gesture which can be recognised by the sensitised area 25 and a gesture recognition module for transmitting an authorised code signal to the security device 23 upon recognition of the selected or created gesture over the sensitised area. Such a gesture pattern can easily be modified from the I/O device by the user and ensure an improved security to a conventional keyless entry system.

A rotatable selector mechanism 10 for a motor vehicle transmission has a selector knob 15 rotatable in a housing to select an operating mode of the transmission among a number of selector positions indicated by a label (P,R,N,D,M). The selector mechanism further includes a detent plate 24 which cooperates with a detent pin 30 for maintaining the selector knob 15 in each of positions. The detent plate 24 is connected to position sensors 25 for generating selector signals to a transmission control unit 26 which supplies control signals to an actuator for operate the transmission according to the operating mode selected. The detent plate 24 is also associated to the selector knob 15 and to a drive correction means 39 by means of clutch devices 34, 43 respectively to engage the detent plate 24 to one of the selector knob 15 and the drive correction means 39. The clutch devices 34, 43 and the drive corrections means 39 are controlled by the transmission control unit 26 to move the detent plate 24 from a selector position selected by the driver to another selector position representative of the operating mode of the transmission by means of the drive correction means 39 without moving the selector knob 15. The selector knob 15 further includes an illuminated pointer 16 constituted by one of several LEDs controlled by the transmission control unit 26 so as to change the LED illuminated in front of the label according to the position of the detent plate 24 when the latter has been moved by the drive correction means in order to indicate the operating mode of the transmission.

A vehicle has a vehicle body and a vehicle bonnet assembly. The vehicle bonnet assembly includes a bonnet (14) hinged at its front to the vehicle body (10) and latched at its rear by two latch devices. Each latch device comprises a latch assembly (17) mounted to the vehicle body (10) and a striker (21) mounted to the bonnet (14). Impact sensors are configured to detect a front collision with a pedestrian and two lift actuators (18) are arranged to raise the rear edge of the bonnet (14) into a deployed position in response to a pedestrian impact. Each latch assembly (17) includes a latch claw (26) moveable between a latch position in which the striker (21) is held by the latch claw (26) and a release position in which the striker (21) is releasable from the latch claw (26). Each latch assembly (17) also includes a release member (27) which is operable by a driver of the vehicle to allow the latch claw (26) to be moved towards its release position and allow the bonnet (14) to be lifted. A release actuator (32) is arranged to move the release member (27) and allow the latch claw (26) to be moved towards its release position and retain it in said position when the bonnet (14) is lifted by the lift actuators (18) in the event of a pedestrian impact. Each release actuators (32) is retained by a spring clip (37) which is attached to one end of a release tape (38) whose other end is connected to one of the lift actuators (18). The release tape (38) is normally hidden by the bodywork under the bonnet (14). However, when the bonnet (14) is moved to the deployed position by the lift actuators (18), the tape (38) is exposed and can be pulled to release the clip (37). The release actuator (32) can then pull away, allowing the latch assembly (17) to be re-set.
