The usefulness of the linear approximations is demonstrated, and basic attributes of data which are believed important to system response are introduced. Cruise control system for a vehicle includes a sensor (14) for monitoring the speed of the vehicle, a sensor (12) for monitoring the range of vehicles moving in front of the equipped vehicle, switch means (16) for manually selecting a cruising speed, switch means (18) for manually selecting a headway which controls the separation between the equipped vehicle and a vehicle moving in front of the equipped vehicle and means (18) for switching the cruise control system on and off. The switch means (18) for selecting the headway is manually adjustable between a minimum value and a maximum value. Automatic switch means (20) is provided for switching the cruise control system off when the vehicle is stopped, the headway being automatically switched to a maximum value when the cruise control system is switched on.

A rotatable selector mechanism 10 for a motor vehicle transmission has a selector knob 15 rotatable in a housing to select an operating mode of the transmission among a number of selector positions indicated by a label (P,R,N,D,M). The selector mechanism further includes a detent plate 24 which cooperates with a detent pin 30 for maintaining the selector knob 15 in each of positions. The detent plate 24 is connected to position sensors 25 for generating selector signals to a transmission control unit 26 which supplies control signals to an actuator for operate the transmission according to the operating mode selected. The detent plate 24 is also associated to the selector knob 15 and to a drive correction means 39 by means of clutch devices 34, 43 respectively to engage the detent plate 24 to one of the selector knob 15 and the drive correction means 39. The clutch devices 34, 43 and the drive corrections means 39 are controlled by the transmission control unit 26 to move the detent plate 24 from a selector position selected by the driver to another selector position representative of the operating mode of the transmission by means of the drive correction means 39 without moving the selector knob 15. The selector knob 15 further includes an illuminated pointer 16 constituted by one of several LEDs controlled by the transmission control unit 26 so as to change the LED illuminated in front of the label according to the position of the detent plate 24 when the latter has been moved by the drive correction means in order to indicate the operating mode of the transmission.

The present invention relates to the control of braking in a motor vehicle that has an automatic vehicle speed control system, and particularly an adaptive vehicle speed control system. The vehicle speed control system includes a cruise controller that can automatically apply (AB) the vehicle brakes when vehicle speed (V) sufficiently exceeds a target speed (TS), for example when separation between the vehicle and a leading vehicle becomes too small. If a driver then presses (DB) the brake pedal during application (AB) of the brakes by the vehicle speed control system, then the application (AB) of the brakes by the vehicle speed control system is not immediately deactivated, but is progressively deactivated. In this way a smooth hand-over is achieved between automatic braking (AB) and driver braking (DB).
