Abstract: There is provided a method to estimate a period characteristic, such as period length or a period location, of a physiological rhythm, such as a cardiac rhythm or a spontaneous breathing rhythm. The method comprises receiving the signal representing the physiological rhythm, estimating a first group of period characteristic estimations based on the signal, generating a prior probability for the period characteristic based on at least a subset of the first group of period characteristic estimations, and estimating a second group of period characteristic estimations based on the first group and the prior probability. By using this method, the accuracy of the signal is improved, especially when the signal is obtained from an accelerometer arranged on the chest of the subject.

Abstract: A sleep monitoring system (100) including: at least one sensor (114) to sense physiological changes of a subject during a test period, the test period having a plurality of epochs, and being configured to form corresponding sensor information for the plurality of the epochs; at least one controller (120, 190, 194) to: receive the sensor information for the plurality of the epochs from each sensor; derive a hypnodensity profile for each epoch of the plurality of epochs based upon the received sensor information for the epochs; calculate at least one hypnodensity feature based upon the hypnodensity profile for each epoch of the plurality of epochs; determine a composite feature based on the at least one hypnodensity feature over the plurality of epochs; compare the composite feature to a at least one predetermined indicator related to sleep apnea; and determine a presence and/or severity of apnea based upon the comparison.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure provide methods and apparatuses for determining a subject's sleep stage based on a PPG signal measured using an in-ear earpiece, In aspects, one or more physiological signals are estimated based on the PPG. Based, at least in part, on the determined sleep stage, one or more outputs are provided. In an example, the outputs are provided to the subject, the subject's physician, the subject's clinician, the cloud, and/or a device external to the apparatus. The methods and apparatus of determining the subject's sleep state described herein are continuous and non-invasive and eliminate the need for a clinical setting.
