There is disclosed a valve assembly for a lung demand regulator of a breathing apparatus. The valve assembly comprises a regulator valve apparatus for regulating a flow of breathing gas, the regulator valve apparatus being actuatable between a closed position in which no flow is permitted and an open position in which flow is permitted. The valve assembly further comprises a lockout mechanism configurable in: i) a lockout configuration in which the regulator valve apparatus is secured in the closed position, and ii) a release configuration in which the regulator valve apparatus is freely moveable. The lockout mechanism comprises an axially compressible spring element. The spring element is configured to be laterally deflected in a first direction in the lockout configuration and laterally deflected in a second direction different from the first direction in the release configuration. The lockout mechanism is configured such that the spring element is axially compressed during movement of the lockout mechanism between the release configuration and the lockout configuration. Also disclosed is a lung demand regulator and a breathing apparatus comprising a lung demand regulator.

The invention relates to a respiratory apparatus comprising a housing (1), in which a valve seat (4), with an axially arranged air admission channel (6), a closing member (7), associated with said air admission channel on the exit side and a drive motor (8) are placed. A pressure sensor (15), for recording the pressure prevailing in the respective respiratory phase, is located in a measuring chamber (2), which links said air admission channel and the air exit channel (3), which is shaped in the housing and can be connected with a respiratory protective mask. Said drive motor, which is connected with the closing member of the valve device by means of a control system, is controlled on the basis of pressure ratios, prevailing on inspiration and expiration. The air supply to said respiratory protective mask is regulated according to a preset control feature. Apart from the air duct, which is exactly adapted to respiration, said respiratory apparatus is small and compact, requires few mechanical components and is insensitive to impact load.

A pressure regulator suitable for use as a breathing demand valve in self-contained breathing equipment comprising a first chamber (31) incorporating an inlet port (29,30) having an inlet valve (36) therein, preferably in the form of a poppet valve and biased so as to seal of the inlet port, and separated from a second chamber by a diaphragm (6). The diaphragm co-operates with the end of a stem (3) extending from the poppet valve member (36) of the inlet valve such that, upon inhalation by the user, the diaphragm (6) is deflected towards the inlet valve and exerts a force on the poppet valve stem sufficient to open the poppet valve and, upon exhalation by the user, the diaphragm (6) is deflected away form the inlet valve so that the diaphragm no longer contacts the end of the poppet valve stem and the inlet valve closes. A baffle plate (9) is positioned in between the diaphragm and inlet valve so as to prevent, when the inlet valve is open, a portion of the pressurised fluid flow from impinging upon the underside of the diaphragm and tending to close the inlet valve. Optionally, the end of the diaphragm may incorporate an exhaust port to ambient, which, when the inlet valve is opened, is sealed by the end of the poppet valve stem sealably engaging with a valve seat around the exhaust port.

A valve arrangement intended particularly, but not exclusively, for use with a breathing regulator (1) for underwater breathing apparatus includes an outlet side, an inlet (11) through which gas can pass to the outlet side from a source of gas having a pressure above atmospheric pressure, a movable valve means (12) which functions to close the gas inlet, and a servo device (21) for regulating the valve means. The servo device includes a servo housing (21) and two mutually joined arms (24, 26). The arms provide a lever effect whereby the supply of air can be controlled with great precision. The simplicity of the lever arrangement imparts a long useful life to the valve arrangement. A breathing regulator (1) which includes such a valve arrangement is preferably made essentially entirely from a plastic material.
