摘要： A breakaway basketball rim assembly (10) in which the mounting bracket (16) and rim (12) are operably interconnected by a torsion rod (26) which twists resiliently in response to an impact or other downward load on the rim (12). The torsion rod (26) may extend parallel to the backboard, with one end (28a) being fixedly mounted to the mounting bracket (16) and the other end (28b) being fixedly mounted to the rim (12), so that the torsion rod (26) allows the rim (12) to deflect downwardly about an axis that extends parallel to the backboard. The torsion rod (26) may be mounted to overlapping flanges (32a,32b,34a,34b) on the mounting bracket (16) and the rim (12). There may also be a longitudinal torsion rod (52) that extends perpendicular to the transverse torsion rod (54), so as to permit the rim (12) to deflect downwardly about axes that extend both parallel and perpendicular to the backboard (18). Also provided is a structure for attaching the net (20) to the rim member (12), in which there is a depending flange (94) on the lower edge of the rim and a plurality of through openings (96) having projections (110a,110b) which receive and hold the attachment loops on the net.

A support arm (24) containing a slot (34) with a plurality of notches (36) is pivotally connected at one end to the parallelogrammatic structure and slidably engages a post (25) attached to the parallelogrammatic structure. When a notch (36) engages the post (25), the parallelogrammatic structure is locked in position. A user equipped with a pole (65) applies a force to the goal forcing the notch (36) to disengage the post (25) and allowing the user to raise the goal (14) and engage the locking mechanism by releasing the force. By applying a force directly to the support arm (24), a user may disengage the locking mechanism and move the goal up or down. When the goal has been placed at the desired height, the force is released engaging the locking mechanism and preventing further deformation of the parallelogrammatic structure.

The tilt regulating structure biases a rollable member (42) within a detent (40) formed in the back plate. A pivot axis member (140) is coupled to the tilt regulating structure to define the tilt and roll axes of the movable portion relative to the fixed portion.
