The video signal for transmission may be generated using a memory means storing data representing a plurality of video segments wherein data relating to a selected segment is read out by commandable reading means, converted into a transmittable video signal and coupled to one of the display terminals. When the video display system is provided in a bowling center system including a plurality of bowling lanes, a plurality of scoring systems and a manager's control system, the manager's control system functions as the central control unit. A manager's communication network may link the manager's control system to the commandable reading means. The bowling center system includes a plurality of lanes, arranged in lane pairs, and a plurality of game control units. The scoring systems may be provided per lane, per lane pair or per game control unit. Each game control unit may have a video switch. There may also be a plurality of user input devices, one for each video display terminal, coupled to the manager's control system or a scoring system whereby video signals may be requested.

A processor (36) provides an enhanced scoring to the otherwise traditional scoring when the ball (16) reaches the preselected location (34) at the same time a particular preselected spot of light (30) reaches a particular location on the lane (12). By way of example, a bowler attempts to have the bowling ball (16) pass the predetermined location (34) on the lane (12) when a preselected spot of light (30) is illuminated, and if successful, the scoring of a strike or a spare will be enhanced as a result of the timing of the ball (16) with the moving spots of light (30). Various locations on the lane (12) are assigned enhancing values for adding to the score of the bowling game.

The game control unit (16) responsive to pin fall data received from the gamesetter generates scoring information which is displayed using video graphic displays on the overhead monitors (20R, 20L). The game control program can be any one of a plurality of different game programs which may be downloaded to the memory from a memory associated with the manager's control terminal. According to the particular game program, the number of bowling frames the game may vary as well as the number of balls and pins utilized in each frame. The manager's control system (26) provides accounting control over the bowling center system (10) and is operable to override operation of a selected game control unit as necessary. A plurality of remote terminals (21) are provided asscciated with selected ones of said lane pair control systems (16). Each remote terminal system includes a keyboard (24) and a display monitor (22). The remote terminal (21) operates under the control of the game control unit (16) to allow a user thereof to enter requests for video displays. The video displays include, for example, ball trajectory displays which illustrate the path of the ball on the bowling lane, or dynamic displays, such as for training, generated by video source devices associated with the manager's control system (26).
