Lateral member assembly for use in an underdrain lateral distribution system is made of plastics but is as capable as much heavier and more costly prior art metallic assemblies in supporting a bed of filter media which must be periodically backwashed with liquid and gas. Complementary elements, including a rigid extruded floor plate member having longitudinally extending side edge channels, and an overlying screen member having flange portions adapted to be retained by undercut recesses in the side edge channels, are adapted to be assembled to each other to form hollow lateral assemblies. In a preferred embodiment, the screen member is telescopically assembled to the floor plate member to cause the screen flange portions to interlock with the recesses in the side edge channels. The resulting assembly is sealed against leakage where the members are interlocked by a pair of flexible, integral plastic sealing strips which are co-extruded with the rigid floor plate member. In an alternative arrangement, the flange portions of the screen members engage a cam surface on the floor plate member which forces them away from each other as the screen member is pressed down against the floor plate member, thus causing them to snap into the undercut recesses in the side edge channels. The flange portions are then retained in a locked relationship with the floorplate member and sealed by flexible rod members forced into the space between the outside surfaces of the screen member and the outer walls of the side edge channels.

Underdrain lateral system, which is especially adapted for use in a gravity filter bed, includes, as its preferred embodiment, scallop-shaped laterals (26, 126) having an upper, wrapped wire, slotted screen surface (28). The screen surface supports and retains the filter media particles (118) directly, without the necessity of an underlying gravel layer, and is itself supported by channel-shaped rod members (34) which are welded to the wires (30). The web portions (36) of the channel-shaped rod members perform the function of simultaneously distributing air and water during backwashing, and include a smaller total area of apertures (38) in upper channels and a larger total area of apertures (40) in lower channels to cause a plenum (56) to be formed inside the laterals which ensures that the distribution of air and water will be uniform throughout the lateral, even if the lateral is not perfectly level. Distribution of the air and water throughout all of the laterals is made even more uniform by mounting the laterals on a header (124) and providing perforated flow tubes (122) which extend from each lateral into the header to produce an additional air plenum (135) therein.

An improvement for a filter system which distributes backwash fluid uniformly throughout a bed of granular media is disclosed. The filter system includes a distributor positioned beneath and supporting the media, with the distributor having a plurality of walls which define a primary horizontal conduit and a secondary horizontal conduit. At least one of the walls which define the conduits contains metering orifices that connect the primary conduit to the secondary conduit. The improvement includes at least one baffle positioned within the primary conduit to facilitate uniform flow of backwash fluid from the primary conduit through the metering orifices into the secondary conduit. The baffle may comprise flanges extending from the walls which define the primary conduit normal to a fluid flow direction in the conduit. Alternatively, the baffle may include posts positioned within the conduit. The baffle generally reduces flow velocity near the wall which contains the metering orifices to enhance distribution of backwash fluids from the primary conduit to the secondary conduit. The baffle is preferably located near an inlet for the primary conduit, which is the high energy portion of the conduit. The invention also includes tubular inserts which may be placed in the metering orifices to assist backwash fluid flow in making the 90 degree turn from the primary conduit into the metering orifices.

Each type of opening is covered with a resilient or sprung shield, which permits liquid to flow into and out from the housing in a direction intended for respective openings.

A flow collector/distributor for a water treatment tank comprises a housing proportioned to communicate through a wall of the water treatment tank to provide flow communication between the tank interior and the tank exterior. The collector/distributor defines an inner end to project inwardly from the tank wall and an outward end to face outwardly from the tank wall. A plurality of slots are defined in the tubular housing, positioned to communicate with the tank interior when the collector/distributor is seated in the tank wall. The slots are of a width which is narrow enough to permit water flow therethrough while substantially preventing passage therethrough of water treatment material present within the tank. One or more one-way valves are provided to permit water flow through all of the slots from the tank interior through the collector/distributor to the tank exterior, but to prevent water flow through some, but not all, of the slots from the tank exterior through the collector/distributor to the tank interior. Also, a novel slot design is disclosed having improved flow characteristics.

Bei einer solchen Filterdüse ist die Verstopfungsgefahr geringer als bei bekannten Düsen. Jene stellen daher einen regelmässigeren Betrieb sicher und verlangen weniger häufige Reinigungen.
