The present invention relates to a cooled strand guide roller (1) mounted at more than one location for guiding a metal strand (S) in a continuous casting machine, and to a method for cooling a strand guide roller (1) mounted at more than one location. The problem addressed by the invention is to specify an internally cooled strand guide roller (1) mounted at more than one location, said strand guide roller (1) being configured in a simple, robust and operationally reliable manner. Furthermore, the height of the strand guide roller (1) is intended to be adjustable easily and quickly. The solution is achieved by way of a strand guide roller (1) having a collecting bar (7) for supplying the strand guide roller (1) with cooling water, said collecting bar (7) comprising a plurality of brackets (10, 10a, 10b) and, in each case between two successive brackets (10, 10a, 10b), at least one coolant pipe (11) for fluidically connecting the brackets (10, 10a, 10b), wherein an outer bracket (10a) has in each case at least one first connection (8) for internal cooling of the cooled strand guide roller (1) and at least one second connection (9) for cooling the bearing blocks (4), and the first connection (8) is fluidically connected to the ducts (3) of the individual rollers (2a, 2b) and the second connection (9) is fluidically connected to the bearing blocks (4) via the brackets (10).

In a method and apparatus for withdrawing a strand in a horizontal continuous casting installation, the strand is withdrawn from a mold by a predetermined stroke and then retracted by a smaller stroke corresponding to shrinkage of the strand. This cycle of withdrawal and retraction is repeated intermittently. A strand withdrawing and retracting characteristic of a cycle is set in a control unit, and pinch rolls for withdrawing and retracting the strand are controlled based on the set characteristic. Actual withdrawing and retracting strokes of the strand are detected by a detecting device and the detected signal is compared with the set characteristic to produce an instruction signal which is fed back to the pinch rolls, so that the positional accuracy of the strand and the quality of the strand are improved.

Apparatus for horizontally and intermittantly drawing out a cast steel piece (1) from a horizontal mold of a horizontal continuous casting machine in a plurality of cycles each consisting of a drawing operation continuing for a predetermined period of time, suspension of the drawing operation for a predetermined period of time and a push- back operation for a predetermined period of time. The apparatus comprises: at least a pair of friction feed rollers (2A, 2B; 3A, 38); a driving device (4) for driving the pair of friction feed rollers (2A, 2B; 3A, 38); and a damping means (12) including a hydraulic damping device (13) which is driven in interlocked relation to the driving device (4), and a throttle valve for restricting the flow rate of oil flowing out from the hydraulic damping device (13) while the cast steel piece (1) is being drawn out. While the cast steel piece (1) is being drawn out from the horizontal mold, the damping means (12) applies to the driving device (4) a damping force which is proportional to the number of revolutions of the driving device (4), whereby the cast steel piece (1) is prevented from being drawn out from the horizontal mold beyond the above-described predetermined period of time.

An apparatus and a process for casting molten metal are provided having means for controlling and adjusting the position of a cast ingot (26). Position detectors (60,62) located on opposed sides of the casting periphery measure the distance between the outer ingot periphery (64) and the inner mold wall (14). The detectors generate signals (P 1 , P 2 ) indicative of the distance. The signals (P 1 , P 2 ) are fed to a comparator (74) and to adjusting mechanisms (34). If the first signal (P,) is different from the second signal (P 2 ) the position of the ingot (26) is adjusted by adjusting the support devices (32b).
