The invention relates to a polishing device (1) for polishing a metal product (2), in particular a continuously cast slab, billet, or block. The aim of the invention is to achieve a high polishing rate when said metal products are polished. According to the invention, this is achieved in that the polishing device (1) has at least two polishing assemblies (3, 4), each polishing assembly (3, 4) having a mounting (5, 6) for a polishing unit (7, 8). A polishing unit has at least one polishing disk (9, 10) and a driving motor (11, 12) that drives the polishing disk (9, 10). The polishing disks (9, 10) are arranged such that the rotational axes (A, B) of said disks run parallel to each other.

The invention provides a substrate (e.g., a glass pane) having generally opposed first and second major surfaces. At least one of these major surfaces bears a functional coating and has a peripheral region that is substantially free of the funcitonal coating. Another embodiment provides a multiple-pane insulating galss unit comprising two spaced-apart panes and a spacer joining confronting, inner peripheral surfaces of the panes. At least on of the panes has a coated outer surface. the coated outer surface has a peripheral region that is substantially free of the coating. The invention also provides methods for treating a coated substrate that has generally opposed first and second major surfaces each bearing a functional coating. The coating is substantially removed from a peripheral region of the first major surface. Likewise, the coating is substantially removed from a peripheral region of the secon major surface. A further embodiment provides a barrier layer that prevents cotact between glazing compound and an exterior coating. Durable compounds are provided in yet another embodiment.

The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for removing coatings from generally opposed first and second major surfaces of a substrate. The method includes providing a table having a surface for slidable receipt of the substrate. First and second grinding apparatuses are provided at a mounting portion of the table, opposite one another. As the substrate moves over the table surface, it contacts the first and second grinding apparatuses. The coatings are simultaneously removed from the first major surface with the first grinding apparatus from the second major surface with the second grinding apparatus.
