In a process for building tires for vehicle wheels, a carcass sleeve is arranged on a shaping drum including two half-drums and two supports. Each support is operatively associated with one of the half-drums and carries a plurality of turning-up levers having free ends positioned close to the respective half-drum. Two annular anchoring structures are disposed around the carcass sleeve and each of the two supports is locked to the respective half-drum by interposing only stiff mechanical elements in mutual contact between the support and the half-drum. The carcass sleeve is shaped in a toroidal conformation, by setting a threaded shaft in rotation and moving the half-drums dose to each other. Subsequently, each of the two supports is unlocked from the respective half-drum and the threaded shaft is set in rotation to move each support close to the respective half-drum and lift up the free ends of the turning-up levers until the end flaps of the carcass sleeve are turned up around the annular anchoring structures.

There are also described an apparatus (3) for building tyres wherein said process is carried out and a plant for building tyres (20) comprising such building apparatus (3).

A process and apparatus for turning up the carcass plies in a tyre, the tyre comprising a carcass structure including at least one carcass ply (2) provided with at least one reinforcing element coated with at least one layer of elastomeric material, and at least one annular reinforcing structure. The apparatus is equipped with a support drum (13) conveniently shaped for supporting at least one ply (2), and with at least one turning-up device (100) provided with an annularly continuous presser element (3). The latter is axially translatable along the axis X-X' of the support drum (13) and radially expandable or contractible relative to the axis of the support drum (13) between a contracted position and an expanded position to turn up the carcass ply (2) around an annular reinforcing structure. The device is further provided with means for adjusting the contracted position of the annular element (3) depending on the size of the tyre to be manufactured.

A tire building drum is used, which includes at least one core body, which is disposed at an axial inside of a pair of bead lock means, and which comprises a plurality of sheets of rigid support members disposed in a toroidal shape and adapted to be displaced and thereby expanded or contracted. Bead cores are locked by the bead lock means, respectively, and a center portion of a carcass band is bulged while displacing the bead lock means close to each other. Back side portions of the carcass band are folded to radial outsides around the bead cores, respectively. The core body is then radially expanded to the maximum diameter while locking the bead cores, and tire component members are assembled onto the radially expanded core body.

An improved method of molding tires is disclosed, wherein the improvement consists in that tire molding is carried out by way of the steps of detecting movement of a stitcher tool during the tire molding under manual handling with the aid of a position detecting device, detecting at least either of the number of revolutions and the direction of rotation of a molding drum with the aid of a rotation detecting device, storing the results of detecting in a storage device and thereafter automatically controlling movement of the stitcher tool as well as at least either of the number of revolutions and the direction of rotation of the molding drum by processing signals issued from the storage device. Further, another improved method of molding tires is disclosed according to other aspect of the invention, wherein the improvement consists in that tire molding is carried out by way of the steps of detecting movement of a stitcher tool during tire molding under manual handling for a series of processes comprising turn-down, bead-stitch, turn-up and ply-lock with the aid of a position detecting device, detecting at least either of the number of revolutions and the direction of rotation of a molding drum with the aid of a rotation detecting device, detecting movement of a pull-out device under manual handling with the aid of a position detecting device prior to carrying out turn-up processes after completion of bead-stitch process, storing the results of detecting in a storage device and thereafter automatically controlling movement of the stitcher tool, at least either of the number of revolutions and the direction of rotation of the molding drum and movement of the pull-out device by processing signals issued from the storage device.
