The invention relates to a method for producing a continuous paper web for the production of security documents and value documents, comprising the following steps: • a) producing a continuous paper web on a cylinder mould machine, wherein the paper web is divided into a plurality of identical sheets of paper extending perpendicularly to the continuous longitudinal direction, and providing at least one sheet of paper per mould circumference of the cylinder mould with at least one watermark for the control of further processing steps, wherein there are certain position deviations between the positions of the watermarks of the sheets of paper, • b) detecting the positions of two or more watermarks on the continuous paper web, • c) determining mark positions having position deviations smaller than the position deviations of the detected watermarks, • d) producing coloured identification marks at the determined mark positions of the paper web, • e) detecting the positions of the produced identification marks, • f) providing the paper web with at least one through-opening in each of the sheets of paper by using the detected positions of the produced identification marks, wherein the through-openings each have exactly one straight edge arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the continuous paper web, • g) detecting the positions of the straight edges contained in the produced through-openings, and • h) providing the paper web with at least one film, which has security features to be applied to the paper web, on each of the sheets of paper by using the detected positions of the straight edges contained in the produced through-openings.

Slip and protective label assemblies are provided, as well as methods of manufacture and application to a receiving face. In one case, the assembly includes a slip layer and a protective layer, with the slip layer divided into a slip portion that is printed upon, a surrounding border portion, and a tab portion. The reverse side of the slip layer is coated with a release coating such that the slip layer may be removably laminated to the protective layer using an adhesive. In another case, direct thermal stock is laminated to an intermediate layer to form a slip laminate, which is adhered to a protective layer to form the assembly. In all cases, the border portion of the slip layer or slip laminate may be removed to attach the label to a receiving face, and the protective layer may be peeled away to provide access to the printed slip portion.

Generally described, under one aspect of the invention, a single unique delivery notice (20) is left at the particular location. However, this notice is 'linked' to the parcel(s) (110, 120) that were undeliverable. This can be done by a handheld portable data acquisition device that includes a scanning or reading means, allowing information to be acquired from the delivery notice (20) as well as from the parcels, and stored on the handheld portable data acquisition device (30). If ten parcels were undeliverable, only one delivery notice is left behind but is 'linked' to all ten packages. The intended recipient can then contact the delivery service via the Internet (or other suitable network) or by phone, by using information provided on the delivery notice. By providing the delivery service with unique information from the delivery notice, the intended recipient can get valuable information regarding the undelivered parcels. Such information can include shipper name, how many packages from each shipper, time of attempted delivery, COD status, etc. Arrangements can then be made to have the package(s) redelivered, held at a local operation center, redirected, or returned.

A business form (10) uses a dual label construction to advantage, particularly in association with express delivery forms. A first sheet of paper (11) has a first face (12) with indicia (13, 14, 15) and a second face with a first pressure sensitive adhesive system. A second sheet (21), substantially the same size and shape as the first sheet (11), has a first face, and a second face with a second pressure sensitive adhesive systems. The adhesive systems preferably are alternating strips of pressure sensitive adhesive and release material, with small gaps between them, so that when the second faces are placed in face-to-face engagement with each other they will separate, providing adhesive on each of the second faces. The second sheet (21) may be a substantially transparent plastic such as polyester, which may be placed over the first sheet (11), to protect it, after the first sheet (11) has been adhered to a surface (e.g. a package for express delivery). The adhesive systems may be UV or corona treated to cure the release material strips and modify the tackiness of the adhesive. Alternatively, the second sheet (21) first face also has indicia on it, and a number of perforations separating it into individual labels, e.g., each with bar coding. The first sheet (11) first face (12) may have a carbonless coating, and a third, and additional, sheets with cooperating carbonless coatings may be provided operatively connected over the first sheet (11).
