A cord, in particular for reinforcing tyres, containing a cellulosic multifilament yarn, characterized in that the cellulosic multifilament yarn has a strength of at least 35 cN/tex and the individual filaments of the multifilament yarn have a linear density of at least 2.3 dtex, is disclosed. In use, such cords display a significantly improved fatigue behaviour, i.e. a significantly higher fatigue resistance, than standard cords having a linear density of the individual filaments in the range from 1 to 2 dtex.

Letting d (mm) be the cord diameter of the steel cord and T (MPa) be the tensile strength of a steel filament forming the steel cord, the following relation is satisfied: a 1 T − b 1 > d > a 2 T + b 2 (where a 1 is 3.65 × 10 -4 mm/MPa, b 1 is 0.42 mm, a 2 is -8.00 × 10 -5 mm/MPa, and b 2 is 0.78 mm), and the tensile strength T of the steel filament is 3000 MPa (exclusive) to 4000 MPa (exclusive) and the number of hits E under a bead core of the steel cord in the carcass ply is 12 hits/25 mm (exclusive) to 38 hits/25 mm (exclusive).

A radial ply pneumatic tire (10) has carcass plies (13 to 18), reinforced by nylon monofilaments and folded axially around a pair of laterally spaced bead cores (11, 12), belt plies 31 to 38), reinforced by nylon monofilaments and at least one layer (60 to 62), comprising a spirally wound, nylon reinforced strip, extending across the belt width and interposed between the belt plies (31 to 38) and the tire tread (40). In a preferred embodiment, which is suitable for use on an aircraft, the tire has several turn-up (15 to 18) and turn-down (13, 14) carcass plies as well as strips (65, 66), reinforced by nylon cords, interposed between the turn-up and turn-down plies near the bead cores.
