An apparatus for winding tape includes a cantilevered support arm for supporting in a winding position a core onto which the tape is to be wound with a surface drive roller pivotal to a position engaging the outside of the package for causing rotation of the package in the driving position about a longitudinal axis of the arm. A lay-on roller directs the tape on to the core such that the rotation of the core acts to wind the tape into the package. The lay-on roller is driven by a lead screw in movement longitudinally of the axis to form a generally cylindrical package structure of the tape. With the lay-on roller in a retracted position to one side, the finished package on the support arm is moved by a rotatable drive head rotating about a vertical axis from the winding position away from the drive roller to a doffing position and simultaneously an empty core is moved from the doffing position over the drive roller to the winding position. The apparatus includes four winding positions at the comers of a rectangular frame (11,12,13) so that each package at each of the positions is moved simultaneously to the doffing position outside the frame for ready access by an operator.

The invention concerns a method of winding electric tape, without distortion, to produce a large coil, the method calling for the tape (2) to be fed by a feed device (5) on to a rotating former (1) which is several times wider than the tape (2), both the tape feed (5) and the former (1) being movable relative to each other parallel to the former axis. The rotational speed of the former (1) and the relative longitudinal speed between the former (1) and the tape feed (5) are coordinated with each other under computer control in such a way that the tape (2) is wound on in a succession of closely wound layers, the direction of the relative longitudinal motion between the former (1) and the tape feed (5) being changed at the ends of the coil, also under computer control. In order, when using this method, to avoid crowding or distortion of the tape at the ends of the coil, the invention proposes that the relative longitudinal speed between the former (1) and the tape feed (5) is increased for a short length of time at least during the last rotation of the former (1) before the change in direction at the ends of the coil.
