Vorzugsweise wird die Umspulgeschwindigkeit in Abhängigkeit von der sich auf einer Vorlage (1) noch befindlichen Restfadenlänge programmgemäss geändert, wobei die Restfadenlänge aus der Differenz zwischen der totalen Länge des Fadens auf der Vorlage und der bereits von der Vorlage abgespulten Länge des Fadens ermittelt wird. Die totale Länge des Fadens auf einer Vorlage wird aus dem Gewicht des vorgelegten Fadens und einem Kalkulationsfaktor Länge pro Fadengewicht berechnet. Zu diesem Zweck enthält die Einrichtung zur Durchführung dieses Verfahrens eine Wägezelle (12), die an die Steuereinheit (8) der Umspuleinrichtung angeschlossen ist. Die Umspulgeschwindigkeit kann während des gesamten Umspulprozesses nahe an jener Grenze gehalten werden, hinter der Fadenbrüche vermehrt auftreten.

In an apparatus which takes up a strip sheet being discharged on a bobbin (7) while moving the strip sheet in a reciprocating manner, a touch roller (1) is brought into contact with the bobbin and is rotated at a peripheral speed which is controlled such as to be equal to the discharge speed of the strip sheet, and the take-up torque is adjusted such that the strip sheet is taken up at an optimum tension, thereby allowing a take-up operation which is free from disconnection and slacking of the strip sheet.

A power spring (30) passively applies tension to a cable (16) connected to an aircraft refueling boom (12). The power spring has a first end engaging a fixed arbor (26) and second end engaging a rotatable spooling drum (20) around which a portion of the cable is wound. The power spring biases the drum to rotate in a winding direction to apply tension to the cable, and the power spring stores energy when the drum rotates in an unwinding direction. The power spring may be located inside the drum or outside the drum. The drum may be actively driven by a motor (32) that may be uncoupled from the drum to permit freewheeling rotation of the drum, wherein the power spring continues to apply tension to the cable. The invention eliminates reliance on one or more powered motors for removing unwanted slack in the cable.
