A system and a method are provided for damping vertical oscillations of an elevator car hovering at an elevator landing. The system includes a sensor, a controller and an elevator machine connected to a traction sheave. The sensor is adapted to provide a sensor signal indicative of rotation of the traction sheave, wherein the rotation of the traction sheave corresponds to the vertical oscillations of the hovering elevator car. The controller is adapted to provide a control signal based on the sensor signal. The elevator machine is adapted to reduce the vertical oscillations of the hovering elevator car by controlling the rotation of the traction sheave based on the control signal.

An elevator controlling apparatus includes a speed pattern generating portion and a deceleration rate command portion. The speed pattern generating portion generates a speed pattern for performing control that accelerates and decelerates a car to stop at a destination floor. The deceleration rate command portion determines during decelerating movement of the car whether or not a deceleration rate value of the speed pattern can be increased based on information from a torque detector that detects torque of a driving apparatus that moves the car. The speed pattern generating portion is able to reduce the deceleration rate value of the speed pattern from a first deceleration value initially then switch over to a second deceleration value that is greater than the first deceleration value if the deceleration rate command portion determines that increasing the deceleration rate of the speed pattern is possible.

An exemplary method is useful for controlling movement of an elevator car in an elevator system that includes a machine that selectively moves the elevator car and a machine brake that selectively resists movement of the elevator car. The method includes determining whether the elevator car is near a landing and determining whether a door of the elevator car is open. A desired operation includes desired movement of the elevator car while the elevator car is near the landing and the door is open. A determination is made whether the elevator car moves other than according to the desired movement. The machine brake is applied for stopping movement of the elevator car responsive to elevator car movement other than the desired movement while the elevator car is near the landing and the door is open.
