The thin film EL device includes a luminescent layer (21) made of column polycrystals formed by independently evaporating luminescent host material and an activator (1m) and then combining evaporated substances on a substrate. Electrons (E) in the luminescent layer (21) are accelerated by electric field applied from outside efficiently collide against the activator (1m) without being intercepted by interfaces between crystalline particles. The thin film EL device can be used for display, illumination, writing, reading out and erasure of signals of photo-recording medium.

In an EL device (10) in which a blue light emitting material obtained by doping Ce as a luminescent center into CaGa X S Y host material is used for a luminescent layer (5), values of X and Y in the CaGa X S Y host material are set in ranges of 1.4≦X≦1.9, 2.9≦Y≦3.8. The blue light emitting material thus obtained has a new structure defined by the fact that an X-ray diffraction spectrum obtained by using Cu Kα radiation as a X-ray source has at least one peak in diffraction angles of 13.5±0.2 degree, 14.6±0.2 degree and 25.7±0.2 degree. The blue light emitting EL device (10) has a luminance higher than that of a conventional EL device.

A process for preparing phosphor particles of a host oxide doped with a rare earth or manganese which comprises:preparing an aqueous solution of salts of the host ion and of the dopant ion and a water soluble compound which decomposes under the reaction conditions to convert said salts into hydroxycarbonate,heating the solution so as to cause said compound to decompose,recovering the resulting precipitate andcalcining it at a temperature of at least 500° C.Substantially monocrystalline particles can be obtained by this process.
