A system and method for removing unwanted elements from a gas stream. A biogas stream may be combined with a water stream influent in a venturi device to produce a gas-water mixture effluent. The gas-water mixture effluent is processed in a degas separator to separate and produce a relatively low solubility gas effluent and a relatively high solubility gas-water mixture effluent. The relatively high solubility gas-water mixture effluent is processed through a discharge pressure control valve based on a selected pressure to be maintained in said degas separator and then discharged or reused.

Systems and methods for reducing a target molecule in a fluid are described. A fluid, such as a gas, may be contacted with a fluid capable of binding with the target molecules and removing the target molecules from the fluid. For example, emissions from a production process may be contacted with water to remove volatile organic compound (VOCs), thereby reducing the VOCs in the emissions. The fluid with bound target molecules may form a target fluid that may be discharged from the system or may be reused until the concentration of the target molecules in the target fluid reaches a threshold concentration. An illustrative production process is the fermentation of wine, which produces an off-gas that includes VOCs, such as ethanol. The systems and methods for reducing a target molecule may significantly reduce or even eliminate the amount of ethanol in the fermentation off-gas.

A method for producing H 2 , VFAs and alcohols from organic material is disclosed, including the steps of introducing organic material and microorganisms into a completely mixed bioreactor for producing H 2 , CO 2 , VFAs, and alcohols; sequestering CO 2 in the headspace of the reactor; recovering H 2 from the headspace; and recovering a first liquid effluent including microorganisms, VFAs, and alcohols. Also disclosed is a system for producing H 2 , VFAs and alcohols from organic material, including a completely mixed bioreactor for dark fermentation; an input for supplying microorganisms and the organic material to be broken down; a CO 2 trap in the headspace and including a solid hydroxide for sequestration of the CO 2 gas from the headspace; and a gas output for removal of a gas effluent including H 2 gas from the headspace. The system and method provide higher H2 production rates and a H 2 stream is substantially free of CO 2 .

A system and method for creating a useful carbon-enriched media in a reactor which wall assimilate carbon into an algae biomass, requires measuring a respective carbon concentration of the media, C (measured) , as it enters, and as it leaves the reactor. Operationally, desired carbon concentration values are preset, C (set) , and are provided along with values obtained for C (measured) as input to a system controller. Respective differentials between C (measured) and C (set) at the reactor's input and output ports are determined by the controller and are used to control a volumetric fluid flow rate of the media through the reactor. Specifically, the controller establishes a volumetric fluid flow rate of the media as it is passed through an absorber where the media is carbon-enriched by interaction with combustion gases from an external source (e.g. a power plant).
