Um eine gattungsgemäße Kettenstichnähmaschine derart weiterzubilden, dass zur Ausbildung eines sauberen Nähgutmusterbildes auf der Unterseite des Nähguts die erforderliche Fadenmenge des Unterfadens verringert wird, wird mit der Erfindung vorgeschlagen, dass der Unterfaden (7) bedarfsweise einem Halteelement (27) zugeführt und in diesem gehalten wird, das hinsichtlich seiner Bewegungsrichtung und/oder Bewegungsgeschwindigkeit zur Nähgutauflage entsprechend einer Bewegungsbahn einer Schwenkbewegung des Greifers (11) insbesondere entlang einer kreisbogenabschnittförmigen Bewegungsbahn bewegt wird.
