In a first embodiment, the invention relates to a method and to a device (1) for improving the properties of a web (2.1) of fiber material, especially a paper, cardboard or tissue web, produced in a sheet forming device from a suspension (2) of fiber material. The fibrous web (2.1) is formed from the fibrous suspension (2) and is guided via a plurality of sieve guiding and drainage elements (4) in the sieve direction (S) by means of at least one sieve (3.1, 3.2). The inventive method is further characterized in that transverse flows (Q) relative to the sieve direction (S) of the sieve (3.1, 3.2) are produced in the fibrous suspension (2) in order to achieve improved web properties and higher transverse strength. The inventive device (1) is further characterized in that at least one sieve guiding or drainage element (4) is structured and/or directed at an angle to the sieve direction (S) in order to produce transverse flows (Q) relative to the sieve direction (S) of the sieve (3.1, 3.2) in order to achieve improved web properties and higher transverse strength.
