The wedge-module is designed so that it rotates around a defined arc radius so maintaining both a constant distance between interfaces of the wedged-module and spillway and a constant angle of attack. This device has been demonstrated to accelerate the rate of fluid flow under either low or high head pressures by way of generating a negative pressure (venturi) effect in the device. The nature of the wedge-module is to present a "throat" configuration at the slit opening thereby tending to suck fluid into the device under such negative (venturi) pressures, while maintaining a laminar flow pattern ahead of the wedge-module/spillway arrangement.

The invention relates to a fusible shutter for a hydraulic construction such as a weir, a spillway on a dam or a safety embankment, that comprises a solid member (19) provided on the crest of the construction and maintained thereon by gravity in order to define a watertight or substantially watertight wall, installed on said hydraulic construction and capable of withdrawal so as to let the water flow freely when the level of the reservoir or river reaches a predetermined level, wherein a chamber (2) is formed at the base of the solid member (1) between the latter and the surface bearing same, and pressurising means are used for filling the chamber (2) with water in order to generate under the solid member an upward force when the water of the reservoir or the river reaches the predetermined level. According to the invention, the pressurising means include a water intake level with a supply structure (3) including two compartments (3a, 3b) defined by an inner vertical wall (4), wherein the two compartments (3a, 3b) communicate via at least one passage (5) in the upper portion of the supply structure (3), one of the compartments (3a) having one or more openings in the lower portion thereof for the intake of water from the reservoir or the river into the supply structure (3), while the other compartment (3b) communicates with the chamber (2) under the solid member (1). A method and apparatus for flood irrigation using a pump (14) to transfer water (28) from a water collection area (32) to a flood plain (31) containing potted plants (27) and using gravity to return the water to the water collection area (11) after a resident time in the flood plain (31). A single pipe (40) functions as the conduit for the flow of water in both directions. The flood plain (31) and water collection area (32) may be lined with a water impervious material (33) to conserve the water (28) and to protect the ground water. A plurality of flood plains may be formed by positioning inflatable dikes (34) along the flood plains. An inflatable valve (36) positioned by a controller may be associated with each opening to permit the flooding of only selected ones of the flood plains.
