A fluid discharge device, primarily for w.c. cisterns, has a housing (4, 9) with an outlet (5) through the base of the cistern (1). A main valve assembly (20) with a seal (21) normally blocks this outlet (5). A substantially closed variable volume chamber (26) is formed in the housing (4, 9), the main valve assembly (20) providing its base. A pilot valve (12, 30, 36), controllable externally of the cistern, can open this chamber (26) to the outlet, and there is a restricted passage (10, 49, 58, 88) between the chamber (26) and the interior of the cistern (1). On opening the pilot valve, water (and sometines air under pressure) escaping the chamber (26) alters the pressure balance and the main valve assembly (2) lifts to generate the full discharge. The flow of water can help keep this valve assembly (20) lifted, and a low pressure zone in the discharge passage can be used to keep the chamber (26) scavenged. The valves close when the discharge is completed, and replenishment water penetrates the chamber (26) via the restricted passage (10, 49, 58, 88).

There is described a valve arrangement which in one form is an inlet valve (60) or in another form is a dual flush valve (2). The valves may be used in a variety of situations but find particular application in a cistern for providing water to flush a toilet bowl or similar. The valve arrangement (2) comprises a flushing tube (100) or a pair of flushing tubes (14, 18) which can move axially. One end of the tubes (100, 18) is sealed to an outlet (9). The tubes are provided with rings or collars (16, 22) which co-operatively engage with locking edges (48, 50) of floats (40, 44) to control movement of the tubes (100, 14, 18). The floats (40, 44) are mounted off-centre or in a position spaced apart from their respective centres of gravity so that they are free to move under the effects of gravity and the effects of lift provided by buoyancy of the floats. In operation the sequential effects of gravity and buoyancy cause the floats to hold the tubes in position and then release the tubes thereby allowing selective flushing positions.

More than one through hole (2111) is provided in the central partition plate (211) to communicate with the upper and lower chambers partitioned by the central partition plate (211), and the sum total of the size of the cross-sectional area of all the through holes (2111) in the central partition plate (211) is no greater than 15 square millimetres.
