    摘要: A method (200) to determine a performance characteristic of an exhaust system (14) of an engine (10), where the exhaust system (14) includes an exhaust gas sensor (22) that outputs an exhaust gas signal (28). A combustion event in a cylinder (18a) is fueled at an air-fuel ratio selected to produce exhaust gas that is expected to be distinguishable by the exhaust gas sensor (22) from exhaust gas produced by other combustion events (32), and used to determine the performance characteristic. The performance characteristic may be an exhaust gas transport time (30) of the exhaust system (14), a sensitivity characteristic of the exhaust gas sensor (22), or a fueling correction value necessary to restore fueling to, for example, stoichiometry. Such a method (200) is useful to detect physical changes in the exhaust system (14) such as relocating the exhaust gas sensor (22), or detect if the exhaust gas sensor (22) is damaged or not operating properly.

The switching point of the on-off controller is moved/adapted while the oscillation of the test signal of the lambda probe is analyzed regarding the amplitude and/or the asymmetry of the oscillation around the switching point at a constant control stroke. A desired value for the asymmetry or the amplitude of the oscillation of the test signal of the lambda probe around the respective switching point is predefined, the switching point of the on-off controller being moved such that the desired value is reached.

A computer (20) controls the applied-voltage in a stoichiometric control region, a lean burn control region, an atmosphere detection region and a rich control region to have a fixed value such that the change rate of the applied-voltage is reduced to be less than that in other regions. In addition, when changing the voltage applied to the A/F sensor (30), the computer 20 variably sets the voltage change speed sequentially. Thus, the influence of the capacitive characteristic of the A/F sensor (30) is eliminated.

    摘要: A method of detecting a deteriorated condition of a wide range air-fuel ratio sensor is provided. Firstly, a current is applied to an electromotive force cell to detect a voltage Vs0 across electrodes on opposite side surfaces of the cell. Application of the current is suspended, and a voltage drop Vsd1 across the electrodes is detected after lapse of a time ranging from 10 µs to 1 ms after the application of the current is suspended. Based on the voltage drop Vsd1 is detected a first resistance value Rvs1 equated to the temperature of the electromotive force cell. Further, after lapse of a time ranging from 10 ms to 50 ms after the application of the current to the electromotive force cell is suspended, a voltage drop Vsd2 across the electrodes of the electromotive force cell is detected. Based on the voltage drop Vsd2 is detected a second resistance value Rvs2 equated to an internal resistance of the electromotive force cell including a resistance component resulting from deterioration. By comparison of the resistance values Rvs1 and Rvs2, the deteriorated condition of the wide range air-fuel ratio is detected. An apparatus for carrying out such a method is also provided.
