Valves having seats and counterseats with various contours are provided. In one embodiment, a valve includes a body and a flow control assembly inside the body. The flow control assembly includes a ball, a seat installed on the ball, and a counterseat. The ball is rotatable between open and closed positions to control flow through the body and the seat and counterseat include mating surfaces that engage when the ball is in the closed position such that the seat seals against the counterseat along the mating surfaces. The flow control assembly is configured to allow pressurized fluid in the body to enter a region between the seat and the ball and a region between the counterseat and the body so as to cause a net force on the seat from the pressurized fluid that pushes the seat away from the ball and against the counterseat when the ball is in the closed position and a net force on the counterseat from the pressurized fluid that pushes the counterseat toward the ball and against the seat when the ball is in the closed position.

The invention further provides a valve assembly 40 for connecting first and second conduits 12,14. The assembly 40 comprises: a valve member 16 movably mounted in a housing 18, to define a space 22 between the valve member 16 and the housing 18; inflatable seal means 20,32, operable to provide a seal between the valve member 16 and the housing 18; and an air inlet controller 42 for supplying compressed air into the space 22, for driving a pig 44 along the conduits 12,14. The invention also provides methods of cleaning the valve 10,30 and assembly 40 in situ by in-line fluid flow.

A shutoff or closing valve, especially a ball valve, comprises a valve body (2) having at least one annular sealing surface formed for sealing engagement against a seal (5) carried by an axially displaceably supported seat ring (3). The seat ring (3) or each such seat ring, respectively, is adapted to be urged toward the sealing position, wherein its seal (5) cooperates and contacts the valve body (2), through the intermediary of spring force (4) and/or fluid pressure (via 6). In order to improve the sealing function and enable the accommodation of leakages between the valve body (2) and said seat(s) (3), the seat ring or each such seat ring, respectively, is assigned at least one additional separate seat ring (11) axially displaceably supported independently on the first-mentioned seat ring (3). The additional separate seat ring (11) may be arranged concentrically with, surround as well as rest displaceably against the first-mentioned seat ring (3).
