A semi-automatic pistol of the type which has a bolt (19) which is driven aft by gases as a result of a fired bullet. It drives aft and ahead of a striker assembly (12). The latter includes a plate (15) and a striker element (16) with a striker pin (16t) supported on the plate (15) toward the bolt (19). A hollow cylindrical sleeve (32) with a closed bottom (32f) extends from a hole in the plate (15) in the bolt direction. A substantially stationary aft plate (30) supports a post (20) on which one end of a striker assembly return spring (22) is supported. The striker assembly return spring (22) extends over the post (20) and into the sleeve (32) through said hole, whereby when said bolt (19) moves aft the sleeve (32) enters the bolt (19), enabling the bolt (19) to move aft in the body.

Shroud (45) connects to the proximal end of bolt (40) which houses firing pin (42) and firing pin return spring (41). When assembly (39) is in a firing mode, a firing mechanism controls the release of energy stored in spring (44) so that member (43) impacts on the proximal end of firing pin (42) which then fires a cartridge located within a firing chamber in a known manner. Firing pin (42) may be located in a concentric position relative to the axis of bolt (40) for firing centre fire cartridges, or the axis of firing pin (42) may be offset to suit rim fire cartridges.
