Electronic imaging apparatus comprising an electro-optic device (50) which, upon being electrically addressed with image information and flood illuminated, provides a static two-dimensional light image display. The apparatus of the invention comprises electronic means (60, 51, 52, 13) for forming an electrostatic charge pattern (corresponding to the light image to be displayed) on a surface of an electro-optic panel (11). A pattern of electrodes (12) connected to a reference voltage (e.g. ground) cooperates with the charge pattern to produce light-modulating electric fields in the panel which, in turn, are used to imagewise modulate the intensity of light passing through the panel. The light image produced by the apparatus lasts until the charge pattern dissipates (which can take several hours, depending on the dielectric constant of the surface which supports the charge pattern).

There is provided a reflection type optical control device in which light use efficiency is improved. An optical control device (8) has a plurality of pixels (10) two-dimensionally arranged on a substrate (30). A first reflection layer (32) is formed on the substrate (30). A light modulation film (34) is arranged on the first reflection layer (32). The light modulation film (34) is formed by an electro-optical material such as PLZT whose refraction factor is changed according to the electric field applied. A transparent electrode (36) is arranged on the upper surface of the light modulation film (34). A second reflection layer (40) is formed on the upper surface of the transparent electrode (36). The second reflection layer (40) is includes a dielectric multi-layer film formed by a first dielectric film (42) and a second dielectric film (44) having different refraction factors layered alternately. The first reflection layer (32), the light modulation film (34), and the second reflection layer (40) constitute a resonator. The transparent electrode (36) and the first reflection layer (32) constitute an electrode pair for controlling the reflection ratio of the optical control device (8) by the electric field applied to the light modulation film (34).

A disclosed optical deflection element includes a magnesia spinel film 22, a lower electrode 23, a lower cladding layer 24, a core layer 25, and an upper cladding layer 26, which are sequentially stacked formed on a silicon single crystal substrate 21. The magnesia spinel film 22, the lower electrode 23, a PLZT film acting as the lower cladding layer 24, and a PZT film acting as the core layer 25 are epitaxially grown on respective underlying layers thereof. Because of a voltage applied between the lower electrode 23 and the upper electrode 26, refractive index variable regions 25A, 24A, in which the refractive index varies, are formed due to the electro-optical effect. Light incident into the core layer 25 is deflected at the interface between the core layer 25 and the refractive index variable regions 25A, 24A to the inner side relative to the surface of the core layer 25.
