The invention provides a lithographic printing plate precursor comprising a grained and anodised aluminium substrate having coated thereon a silver halide emulsion layer, the back surface of said substrate being coated with an inert coating which does not chemically or physically interact with an adjacent silver halide layer when two plates are placed in front to back contact. Fogging of the silver halide layer is avoided and the use of the back coating eliminates the requirement for the use of tissue interleaving when wrapping and packing the lithographic printing plate precursors.

A lithographic printing plate that works according to the silver salt diffusion transfer reversal process is disclosed. The lithographic properties of said plate can be improved by incorporating a hydrophilic amphoteric block copolymer, comprising a non-ionic block of acrylic units with pendant nitrile groups and an acrylamid(in)e block which comprises units with pendant basic and acidic groups. The hydrophilic amphoteric block copolymer is preferentially present in the image receiving layer of the lithographic printing plate. In an alternative embodiment, said block copolymer may be present in a treating solution used for processing said plate or applied onto said plate while printing. The hydrophilicity of the printing plate's surface is improved without deteriorating the ink-acceptance in the printing areas.

This invention relates to a composition and process for enhancing silver images, and, more particularly, for enhancing photographically produced silver images for use in lithography. In the silver salt diffusion transfer process, an imagewise exposed silver halide emulsion layer is positioned in intimate contact with a receptor element and developed with a silver halide developing composition in the presence of a solvent for silver halide such that the unexposed silver halide is dissolved and subsequently diffuses into the receptor element. Development nuclei, or catalyst, contained in the receptor element, cause the diffusing silver halide to be reduced (i.e., developed) to metallic silver, thereby forming an image on the surface of the receptor element. One shortcoming of the silver diffusion transfer process is that a substantial level of silver halide is required to provide a positive silver image of sufficient oleophilicity to function as a lithographic plate. Another shortcoming is that there is often insufficent oleophilic/hydrophilic differential between the image areas and background areas of the lithographic plate. This invention involves a composition for enhancing silver images comprising an oxidizing agent for metallic silver and a silver ion insolubilizing agent which react with photographically produced silver deposits. The composition is particularly useful in enhancing the lithographic utility of photographically produced silver deposits which function as the inkable image area of lithographic printing plates.

A bleach-fixing agent for making corrections on silver imaged lithographic printing plates, which work according to the silver salt diffusion transfer reversal mechanism, is disclosed. By limiting the amount of volatile organic solvents, having a boiling point lower than 100°C, comprised in said correcting agent, to a value not higher than 20% by volume and by adjusting the viscosity of same correcting agent to a value higher than 3 mPas, an improved correcting agent is obtained which is characterized by both a short deletion time, required to convert the undesired oleophilic printing areas into hydrophilic ink-rejecting areas, as well as a short drying time of said correcting agent after being applied to the printing plate's surface.
