A scanning laser having a wavelength compatible with a coating binder so as to cure it as the laser scans and irradiates the coating on a moving web. A system and method for curing flakes by providing a scanning laser which scans across a moving coated substrate in a magnetic field allows images to be formed as magnetically aligned flakes are cured into a fixed position. The images have regions of cured aligned flakes. The scanning laser cures the magnetically aligned flakes within it region it irradiates. Alternatively an array of lasers can be used wherein individual lasers can be switched on and off to fix irradiated coating as a moving web is moved at a high speed.

A method of verifying the accuracy or authenticity of alphanumeric magnetic data on a document, wherein the configuration of a pictorial or graphic magnetic reference image in the document is made visible by bringing movable particulate magnetic material into proximity therewith such that the particulate magnetic material takes up a distribution corresponding to the magnetic field of the reference image; and the magnetic image configuration thus revealed is compared with the reference image to identify any significant disconformity suggesting past exposure of the document to a magnetic field capable of altering said magnetic data.

A magnetic recording medium (13) having a triple layered structure including a substrate (8), a first layer or a soft magnetic thin film (9) of high permeability piled on the substrate (8), a second layer or a vertical magnetization film (10) piled on the first layer (9), a third layer or a soft magnetic film (11) of high permeability piled on the second layer (10). A magnetic recording apparatus (FIG.1) alternately switches the magnetization orientations of the second layer or the vertical magnetization film (10) at a recording location where a latent image is to be formed. The first and third layer or the soft magnetic thin films (9 and 11) can improve recording efficiency. The field produced by the second layer or the vertical magnetization film (10) causes the third layer or the soft magnetic thin film (11) to be magnetized along the surface (20) of the magnetic recording medium (13), and this results in the concentration of the flux owing to switching of the magnetization directions. This enables high density recording and improves recording sensitivity and reproducing sensitivity.

Magnetic recording apparatus wherein a latent magnetic image is produced on a magnetic recording medium which is composed of a ferromagnetic layer to be magnetized along a predetermined direction before forming the latent magnetic image and a magnetic layer of high permeability to be turned to paramagnetic by being subject to the heat of its heating head to its Curie point or above which are respectively laminated to the opposite sides of a base layer, the heating head being playced at the opposite side of the ferromagnetic layer not so as to make a contact thereto thereby to make the cleaning of the heating head unnecessary substantially while keeping the latent magnetic image to be of high quality. In the magnetic recording medium, direct current magnetic field of the opposite direction to the magnetized direction of the ferromagnetic layer or alternating current magnetic field the phase of which is reverse at positions corresponding to opposite ends of at least a paramagnetized part is applied to the paramagnetized part of the high permeable magnetic layer thereby to form a magnetic latent image on the ferromagnetic layer by the leakage of the magnetic flux from the paramagnetized part to the ferromagnetic layer.
