An object of the present invention is to provide an input apparatus and input key capable of reducing the number of operations on the input key for input of symbols and permitting a user to designate a symbol to be inputted, by a simpler operation. An input key 10a to which a plurality of symbols or marks are assigned, has a key top 30a to be pushed, a sensor part 32 for detecting a push position on a surface of the key top 30 by a finger or the like used to push the key top 30a, a moving direction detector 34 for detecting a change of the push position of the finger or the like detected by the sensor part 32 and for detecting a moving direction of the finger or the like during movement thereof on the surface of the key top 30, and a switch 40a to change a state with a push on the key top 30, and has a converter 50 for converting a state of the switch 40a and the moving direction detected by the moving direction detector 34, into symbol information.

The invention relates to a data input device and method, wherein the data input device according to the invention provides an input module, which may be applied to electronic devices or portable terminals, consisting of a number of separation pairs, and the input module includes a number of A separated indication positions and a number of B separated indication positions which are disposed as each A-B type based on a predetermined separation reference line, in two sides, that is, an A separated segment and a B separated segment which are ambilaterally divided based on the separation reference line, so that a data input may be individually or continuously performed by means of an input selection to the one or more separated indication positions.

The present invention provides a character input device that can display character input information on a display screen with a small area and allows a user to input a desired character by a simple operation even in a case where it is necessary to select the desired character from plural characters to input the desired characters. In a character selection area shown in FIG. 6A , at the upper side of a cross of a cross-shaped figure, a circle is added to a character of "NA" and characters of "NA" series are selected. A ∇ mark is added to a lower part of the circle added to the character of "NA" and a Δ mark is added to an upper part of the circle. By pressing any one of an upward direction and a downward direction of a cross key, the characters can be selected. If the upward direction of the cross key is pressed, the character of "NI" is selected. In this case, the character of "NI" is displayed, instead of the character of "NA" as shown in FIG 6B .

There is provided a data input device and a data input method. The data input device including: a sense unit provided by forming a predetermined sense region at a side of a case of an electronic apparatus terminal, for generating a first direction input signal by sensing a horizontal pressure in a predetermined radial direction of the finger put on a reference position within the sense region, and for generating a second direction input signal by sensing a vertical pressure leaned in a predetermined direction while the finger is put on the reference position; and a controller for determining a horizontal pressure direction or a vertical pressure position of the finger from the first direction input signal and the second direction input signal, and for extracting data assigned to a corresponding radial direction and a pressure position to input.

An improved handheld electronic device and keypad include tactile features that help a user to identify certain keys of the keypad. In the present exemplary embodiment, the keypad includes keys in a predetermined region that can be employed during a telephone operation. The keypad additionally includes other keys outside the predetermined region. The keys in the predetermined region include tactile features that enable the user to identify and actuate the keys in the predetermined region during a telephone operation with the user directing minimal visual attention to the handheld electronic device.

A cellular phone improved in the operability of character input buttons such as a dial button. Each of the character input buttons functioning as dial buttons has two different alphabetical characters allocated to one and the other ends (pressed positions). When the one end of a character input button is depressed once, the alphabetical character (e.g. "A") allocated to the end is inputted. When the other end is depressed once, the character (e.g. B) allocated to the end is inputted. The character input buttons are so disposed as to incline longitudinally.
