A liquid crystal display for a laser marker for attaining a higher printing speed, characterized in that a liquid crystal display screen (10) is divided into a first zone (10a) where a sub-scanning is first performed and a second zone (10b) where a sub-scanning is performed following the first zone (10a) sub-scanning, that switching of display is performed independently for each of said first and second zones (10a, 10b), and predetermined voltages are applied, respectively, to row and column electrodes after those row and column electrodes are grounded, whereby display switching processing can be performed independently for each of said first and second zones. Completion of the sub-scanning of the first zone (10a) is detected by a position detecting means, and when such a detection is done, switching of display in the first zone (10a) is independently performed. In addition, when the position detecting means detects the completion of sub-scanning of the second zone (10b), switching of display in the second zone (10b) is performed independently.

There is disclosed an exposure unit (10) and method of operation having advantage of deformable mirror device (DMD) technology. The exposure unit (10) is used to provide front end image processing for a xerographic process printing system. The unit (10), in one embodiment, is constructed as a unitary member having a lamp socket (160), a support for holding a flat DMD substrate, a set of light focusing lenses (17), (18) an image focusing lens (40), a light baffle (19) and an extra light trap chamber. The unit is separated from the xerographic drum by a solid base (14) which contains a slot positioned so that the image from the image lens (40) passes therethrough for supplying the image to the drum. The light bundle is directed to the xerographic drum location along an optical path formed by a system of fold mirrors in the lower body of the unitary member.

A multi-channel laser ROS scanner for simultaneously scanning laser beam components across multiple lines of a photosensitive surface including appratus for determining deviations in the position of the surface from a desired position due to undesired photosensitive surface velocity variations whereby an error correction signal can be generated, and a TIR modulator having a plurality of interdigitated, addressable drive electrodes. The total number of drive electrodes N, of the TIR modulator is greater than the collective number of drive electrodes N. needed to provide the desired pixel resolution for all of the simultaneously scanned lines. When the photosensitive surface is maintained at a desired velocity, such velocity being determined in a conventional manner by system parameters, the surface is correctly positioned and N. adjacent drive electrodes located generally centrally within the TIR electrode configuration are addressed by the video data signals for the multiple scan lines, causing the laser beam components to exit the TIR modulator with an unshifted or "normal" propagation direction within the optical window of the modulator resulting in scan lines being recorded at desired positions on the photoreceptive surface. Should the photosensitive deviate from its desired position at a given time, the error signal functions to cause N s different adjacent drive electrodes to be addressed .whereby the laser beam components exiting the TIR modulator are shifted in propagation direction such that they strike the photosensitive surface at a placement which corrects for the position deviation.
