This disclosure describes techniques for generating a set of data points that form a triangular wave having a desired gain and a desired frequency. In one example, the method includes the step of (a) determining an increment value based on the desired frequency and the desired gain of the triangular wave. The method further includes the step of (b) adding the increment value to a current data point to generate a next data point, the current data point and the next data point forming a subset of the set of data points. The method further includes the step of iteratively performing (a) and (b) to generate the set of data points that form the triangular wave.

Phase setting section (34) sets virtual phases in a frequency series of an audio signal (XA). Unit wave extraction (36) section extracts, from the frequency series, a unit wave of one cyclic period defined by the set virtual phases, for each of a plurality of time points. First generation section (561) generates velocity information corresponding to a degree of compression/expansion, to a predetermined length, of the unit wave. Second generation section (562) generates shape information indicative of a shape of a frequency spectrum of the unit wave having been adjusted. Variation component impartment section (40) generates a variation component by use of the velocity information and shape information generated for the individual time points.

A variable sample rate approximation technique is used for coding and recreating musical signals in a wavetable synthesizer. Many sounds inherently include one large fast transfer of energy followed by vibrations that dampen over time so that the bandwidth requirement of a musical sound is reduced with passing time. Using the variable sample rate approximation technique, musical sounds are classified into two categories, sustaining sounds and percussive sounds. A sustaining instrument creates a noisy stimulus then sustains the sound created by the noisy stimulus. A percussive instrument is also a noisy source and generates a sound signal having high frequencies that decay rapidly while sustaining instruments sustain at all frequencies nearly equally. The sustaining and percussive instruments have substantially different waveform characteristics but present similar conditions with respect to memory reduction. Similarities between the acoustical characteristics of sustaining sounds and percussive sounds are exploited using a variable sampling rate technique to substantially reduce the memory budget of a wavetable synthesizer.

An electronic musical instrument utilizes a tone generator installed with a plurality of timbres for generating a musical tone having a timbre selected from the installed timbres. A MIDI interface is provided for receiving timbre designation information which designates a primary choice and a secondary choice of desired timbres. A bank selector operates when the primary choice is present in the installed timbres for selecting the same so that the musical tone is generated in a desired timbre of the primary choice, and otherwise operates when the primary choice is absent in the installed timbres for selecting the secondary choice in place of the primary choice from the installed timbres so that the musical tone is generated in another desired timbre of the secondary choice.
