Zur Mustererkennung in akustischen Aufnahmen wird ein aufgenommenes Signal in einzelne Frequenzbereiche zerlegt und nachfolgend zur spektralen Zerlegung in wenigstens eine Koeffizientendatei transformiert. Hierbei erfolgen parallel eine hinsichtlich der Frequenzauflösung optimierte erste Transformation und eine hinsichtlich der Zeitauflösung optimierte zweite Transformation. Auf der Basis der Koeffizientendatei erfolgt eine harmonische Dekomposition mit einer Musterzuordnung. Die identifizierten Muster können nachfolgend modifiziert und weiter genutzt werden, beispielsweise in Form einer graphischen Darstellung oder akustischen Wiedergabe.
