A method and a device for actively influencing the intake noise of an internal combustion engine are disclosed. The device for carrying out said method comprises a controller (7), which records the actual noise value (I) by means of a microphone (16) and compares said actual noise value with a set noise signal, which is dependent upon engine speed (D). Further parameters (P) may also be measured, such as, for example, the position of the throttle (12). A comparison signal is generated by comparing the actual noise value and the set noise value. Said comparison signal influences a control signal (Ages)which is also dependent upon the speed of the internal combustion engine. The control signal (Ages) is fed to a loudspeaker (14) which generates a correcting noise (20). Said correcting noise (20) is superimposed on the intake noise (21) to generate the actual noise value (22). The actual noise value should correspond as closely as possible to the set noise value. In this manner, it is not only possible to reduce the level of intake noise, but also to tailor the intake noise to a desired set sound. Similarly, the intake noise can be freely shaped, within the limits of the loudspeaker output, whereby the driver of the vehicle can be given an acoustic feedback, for example under specified operating conditions.
