A repeatability of reproduced video at a varied speed is obtained without any deterioration in picture quality, because of recording of specific data for speed-varied reproduction and continuous detection of the specific data in the speed-varied reproduction.

A recording unit coupled to the data generating circuit records the digital video data and the plurality of relative position data on the digital recording medium such that each specific data includes the associated relative position data, as well as the intra-coded digital picture data.

The rotary head type helical scanning magnetic tape recording and reproducing apparatus is provided with an auxiliary recording head (5a,6a,5b,6b) for recording pilot signals adjacent to a main head (3a,4a,3b,4b) for recording a signal to be recorded, and an auxiliary reproducing head (la,2a,1b,2b) for reproducing the recording pilot signals. The pilot signals recorded to an antecedent track are reproduced by the auxiliary reproducing head (1a,2a,1b,2b) at the time of recording to the next track. A tracking control of the main (3a,4a,3b,4b) head at the time of next track recording is effected according to the reproduced pilot signals.

Further, in a magnetic recording and reproducing device for intermittent recording, there is no danger of causing thinning to recorded tracks; a reproduced image of high quality can be obtained.

The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for reproducing digital video data from a digital recording medium, the apparatus comprising: a reproducing unit configured to read digital video data from the digital recording medium, the digital video data including: a plurality of specific data units, each specific data unit including digital specific data including intra-coded digital picture data and header data, wherein the header data includes: a sync code configured to indicate a start of the digital specific data; identification information; and relative position data associated with the infra-coded digital picture data, wherein the associated relative position data is indicative of a plurality of relative positions from a current nth specific data location on the medium to each of a n+1, n+2, ..., n+m specific data location on the medium, where m is greater than 2; a detection circuit coupled to the reproducing unit and detecting one of the plurality of relative position data from the reproduced digital video data; and a control circuit coupled to the detection circuit, receiving a command and controlling the reproducing unit to reproduce at least another specific data unit based on the detected relative position data and the command.
