In one embodiment, a method of detecting defects on the surface of a disk (12) having a plurality of tracks (t n ) is recited. The method comprises reading, one or more times, the servo bits for a plurality of sectors (i) and determining a burst measure for at least one sector, where the burst measure is a function of the burst signals for the sector. This method further comprises determining a reference value, where the reference value is a function of the burst signals of the plurality of sectors, and comparing the burst measure of at least one sector to the reference value to identify a potential defect. In one embodiment, a sector is mapped as defective where its burst measure differs from the reference value by at least 5 percent.

An offset circuit (60) provides a predetermined analog offset signal to a combining circuit (160, 170) which combines it with an incoming analog signal to provide a composite signal during a servo burst sampling interval. An analog to digital converter (180, 190) samples the composite signal during the servo spoke burst sampling interval, and synchronously samples the analog signal during a user data sampling interval. A digital averaging circuit (210) averages the servo spoke samples over a predetermined averaging interval to provide averaged burst samples having increased bit resolution.

The data sequencer includes a writeable control store including a random access memory directly addressable by a programmed digital microcontroller of the data storage device for writing sequences of control patterns, there being dual function control patterns such that a single sequence of control patterns may be written for controlling states of the programmable data sequencer during both data read operations and data write operations to and from the storage medium and the buffer memory, a control pattern decoder for decoding the control patterns into functional values for controlling operations within the data sequencer , and a stack memory for holding user byte count values indicating respective lengths of said variable length storage locations so that the storage capacity of each said storage location is determined by the data sequencer automatically as a user byte count value associated with a particular variable length storage location is provided at the stack memory.
