A method for cleaning an irradiated nuclear fuel assembly includes chemically enhancing a technique utilizing an apparatus including a housing adapted to engage a nuclear fuel assembly. A set of ultrasonic transducers is positioned on the housing to supply radially emanating omnidirectional ultrasonic energy to remove deposits from the nuclear fuel assembly. Any corrosion products remaining after ultrasonic fuel cleaning will have exposed surfaces that are susceptible to chemical dissolution.

The invention relates to a method for encapsulating a fuel rod (20) or fuel rod section in a container (2), comprising the following steps: a) inserting the fuel rod (20) or fuel rod section into the container (2); b) connecting one of the ends of the container (2) to a purging-gas line; c) dehydrating and purging the container (2) by means of purging gas (G); d) connecting the ends of the container (2) to a bypass line (118) in such a way that a closed gas circuit is produced and circulating a hot gas (H) in said gas circuit until the absolute moisture content reaches an end value (X max ) at which the absolute moisture content no longer rises; e) disconnecting the container (2) from the gas circuit; and f) subsequently closing the container (2) in a fluid-tight manner at both ends.

A fuel assembly for a pressurized water reactor that has a protective grid attached to the bottom nozzle through a spacer insert captured between a control rod guide thimble end plug and the bottom nozzle. A thimble screw attaches the bottom nozzle to the control rod guide thimble end plug through a central opening in the spacer insert. The control rod guide thimble end plug is provided with a raised annular boss that encircles the thimble screw shank and rests against the upper surface of the bottom nozzle through the opening in the spacer insert. The opening in the spacer insert is large enough to provide both an axial and radial clearance between the spacer insert and the end plug to accommodate differences in thermal expansion.
