Write electrodes (13) which cross parallel pairs of sustaining electrodes (11) and are insulated from them, are covered with a surface layer (15), e.g. a thin insulating layer of thickness of 1 µm or less, which allows leakage of excess charges which accumulate on the surface of the layer. So as to minimise damage by ion impact to this thin surface layer (15), the write electrodes (13) should be driven in such a way as to be always maintained at a positive potential relative to the sustaining electrodes (11).

The address electrode (10) is formed on at least one side surface except a top face of the partition wall (9) or is formed such that one side edge faces the at least one side surface of the partition wall (9) or is positioned in the vicinity of the side surface, and plasma discharge display is carried out by cathode glow discharge. Display can be carried out with high definition and high density, and furthermore, driving power, that is, consumed power can be reduced.

First and second substrates (1 and 2) are disposed so as to oppose each other, and a discharge maintaining electrode group (5), which is constituted so that plural pairs of discharge maintaining electrodes (3 and 4) are disposed, is formed on the first substrate (1), and an address electrode group (11), which is constituted so that a plurality of address electrodes (10) are disposed, is formed on the second substrate (2). Particularly plasma discharge display is executed by mainly utilizing cathode glow discharge so that spacing between the electrodes is made to be narrow, and high-definition and high-density display is possible.
